Kayaking is such a fun activity. But cave kayaking is really cool. Literally!

During our time in the Red River Gorge, we made sure to check out this unique experience at the Gorge Underground. It was really interesting to learn about the abandoned mine and explore the five miles of tunnels.

The nice thing about the Gorge Underground is that they offer a few different ways to explore the abandoned mine. The most popular is the classic cave kayaking, where you can boat around with several other kayakers. They also have kayaks that are clear and light up with different colors so you can clearly see in the water. And for those who’d rather sit back and relax, you can take a guided boat tour.

If this sounds like an activity you want to do during your visit to the Red River Gorge, the guide below shares everything you need to know. We think this unique activity is worth doing. So, let’s jump in! (But not really, because that water is cold!)

Underground Kayaking in Kentucky

The best place to go cave kayaking in Kentucky is the Gorge Underground in Red River Gorge. This abandoned mine is filled with 5 miles of tunnels filled with water, making it the perfect place to go kayaking, SUPing, or even taking a boat tour.

As one of the best things to do in Red River Gorge, you’ll want to plan a few hours out of your day to explore the mine with a guide, whether on a kayak or a group boat tour. It’s a fun, family-friendly activity and is a unique experience you can’t get anywhere else.

Location of the Gorge Underground Boat and Kayak Tours

Gorge Underground is in the Red River Gorge area of Kentucky. It’s not far from Natural Bridge State Resort Park and the many fun things to do there.

Some of the cave kayaking tours are run by SUP Kentucky. They are also at the same mine, but you’ll drive to another area in the parking lot. Follow the signs.

History of the Mine Cave in Red River Gorge

The Gorge Underground was originally a limestone mine that was first dug out in the 1890s. It was abandoned in the mid-1980s when a miner hit an underground aquifer. You can still see where the water flows into the mine today.

The abandoned mine sat for about 30 years until it opened as a tourist location. Lights were placed throughout the cave so guides could navigate the tunnels. Otherwise, it would be pitch black inside!

The water in Gorge Underground is about 25-30 feet deep at its deepest points. It can be shallow in areas, so you’ll want to follow your guide and avoid those spots.

Who Can Go Cave Kayaking in Red River Gorge?

As with many boat and kayak tours, there are both age and weight restrictions for safety.

Age minimums:

• Children must be a minimum of 5 years old to participate in cave kayaking.
• Children 5-8 years old cannot paddle their own boat and must sit with an adult in a tandem boat.
• Children over 9 can paddle their own kayaks
• Children must be a minimum of 3 years old to go on the Classic Boat Tour

Weight Limits:

• Classic kayaks require a max weight of 300 lbs in a single kayak and 475 lbs in a double/tandem kayak
• Crystal kayaks require a max of 275 lbs in a single kayak and 400 lbs in a tandem/double kayak

Kayak Cave Tour & Boat Tour Options

At the Gorge Underground in Kentucky, you have a few options for your kayak tour.

Classic Kayak Tour

The most affordable and shortest kayak tour at Gorge Underground is the Classic Kayak Tour. This one-hour guided tour will take you through the abandoned mine as your guide points out features like fossils, the aquifer, and abandoned equipment. There is a max of 12 people per group.

Crystal Kayak or SUP Tour

The Crystal Kayak and SUP tours are very popular due to the colorful lights and clear bottoms. The tour is guided and lasts 1.5 hours. The kayaks and SUPs are lit by LEDs, giving you the opportunity to see into the waters beneath you. There is a max of 8 people per group.

Classic Boat Tour

This is the best option for those who want to see the mine but don’t want to kayak. It’s also perfect if you are visiting with a young child, as children 3 and up are allowed on the boat tour.

The Classic Boat Tour is a guided, hour-long tour that explains the history of the mine and shows off some of the unique things to see inside.

Best Clothing and Gear For a Cave Kayak and Boat Tour

Clothing You Should Wear While Kayaking in a Cave

The cave is 52° year-round, and with no sun, can feel very cold. The water temp is around 40°, so you’ll want to dress warmly and in clothing that you won’t mind getting wet (due to the occasional cave kiss).

We recommend the following for your cave kayaking tour:

• Long, warm pants
• Long-sleeved shirt and a zip-up hoody or jacket
• Extra socks (No shoes are allowed on crystal kayaks) or these neoprene socks are a good option.
• Shoes for the classic kayak tour
• Gloves (winter kayaking gloves are a good option)

For your cave kayaking tour, you will be provided with the following for safety:

• Helmet
• Headlamp
• Personal Flotation Device
• Children under 12 will receive a life vest

Clothing You Should Wear For the Underground Boat Tour

Because the cave is 52° year-round, no matter what the weather is outside, you’ll want to dress warmly inside. Long pants, socks, shoes (your toes will get cold in sandals), and a sweatshirt are all recommended.

For your boat tour, you will be provided with the following for safety:

• Helmet
• Personal Flotation Device / Cushion
• Children under 12 will receive a life vest

What To Expect When Cave Kayaking in Red River Gorge

Mine Conditions

Inside the cave, the tunnels are 60 feet in width and about 30 feet in height. The waters are always calm since there is no wind or waves inside. It is also 52° year-round, and the water temperature is around 40°.

Arrival

They recommend arriving 15- 30 minutes before your scheduled tour time. This will allow the guides to provide you with the equipment you’ll need and go over any safety information.

If you are taking the Classic Kayak Tour, you’ll enter through the Gorge Underground Gift Shop.

The Crystal Kayak Tours start at a different location, towards the back of the parking lot. You will have to walk a short distance with your guide to the water.

On the Kayak Cave Tour

Your guide will take you through the abandoned mine and point out interesting features like abandoned equipment and fossils. You should also see the many trout swimming through the waters and an occasional bat.

What To Expect On a Boat Tour at Gorge Underground

If you opt for a boat tour through the cave versus a kayak tour, your experience will be similar to the Class Kayak Tour.

Arrival

As with the kayak tours, you want to arrive about 15-30 minutes before the start of your tour. After checking in, take the time to look around the gift shop and pick up a souvenir.

We waited out back on the small covered porch. There, you can feel the cool air from the mine. Many guests waiting with us bought sweatshirts to make sure they were warm while on the tour.

On the Boat Tour

Your guide will take you through a large area of the mine while explaining its history and answering any questions you might have. You’ll see the water streaming in from the aquifer that flooded the mine, as well as rainbow trout and old mine artifacts.

Other Things to Do in Red River Gorge

There are so many fun things to do in Red River Gorge, especially if you enjoy outdoor activities. We loved all of the hiking available nearby. And there is also kayaking and boating on the river and lakes close by.

Kentucky’s Red River Gorge Geological Area has more than 100 natural arches. It’s the greatest concentration of arches east of the Rocky Mountains!

Although we’d love to hike to each and every one of them, there isn’t enough time for that. So instead, we put together some of the best hikes in the Red River Gorge for families that will lead to these natural wonders.

Many trails in the Red River Gorge are short, so you can combine several of them and do many in one day. We spent about 2 1/2 days in the Red River Gorge and were able to fit in all of the trails listed below. And that was with resting mid-day (because it was so hot!).

If you only have time for one or two trails, our favorites were the Original Trail to the Natural Bridge at Natural Bridge Resort State Park and Grays Arch Trail in Daniel Boone National Forest.

Prepare For Your Family Hike in Red River Gorge

Dangerous Cliffs

There are some fantastic trails in Red River Gorge that are perfect for families. However, some of these hikes lead to the top of tall arches and cliff overlooks with no guards or railings. It’s best to keep your kids away from the edges and within arm’s reach if there are small.

Limited Cell Service

We were lucky on during our hikes in Red River Gorge that we only lost cell service occasionally. However, there is a still a chance you won’t have cell phone coverage on your hike, so it’s best practice to download a map before you start.

Wildlife

Red River Gorge is home to many species of wildlife and that includes the occasional black bear and poisonous snakes. Always be aware of your surroundings and watch out for the wildlife.

Sky Bridge Loop

• Trail Location: Sky Bridge Road in Daniel Boone National Forest (Trail #214)
• Trail Length: .75-miles
• Trail Difficulty: Moderate due to the number of stairs

The Sky Bridge Loop is a very popular trail in Red River Gorge. At 3/4-mile, it’s relatively short and can be done quickly.

This is an excellent hike in Red River Gorge for families because it isn’t too difficult (there are a lot of stairs, but otherwise, it’s a relatively easy trail).

We recommend heading to the bottom of the arch first. There are a lot of stairs, and it’s easier to go down them at the beginning than up at the end.

Then you can end your hike with views of the Red River Gorge from the top of the Sky Bridge.

Visitor Tip: If you have a family member who has difficulty climbing stairs, you can walk directly to the top of the Sky Bridge Arch via a paved path onto the natural stone arch.

The Sky Bridge Arch is one of the more prominent arches in Daniel Boone National Forest. It’s 75 feet long and 23 feet high and provides lovely shade and shelter for a snack.

After visiting below the arch, follow the trail to the point where you’ll have a beautiful overlook. From there, stone steps will take you to the top of the Sky Bridge.

The trail continues along the top of the arch to a paved path that leads back to the parking lot.

Whistling Arch

• Trail Location: Fd-1007 via Sky Bridge Road in Daniel Boone National Forest (Trail #234)
• Trail Length: .5-miles out-and-back
• Trail Difficulty: Easy

As one of the shortest hikes in Red River Gorge, it’s easy to combine with one of the many other arches in the area. We combined it with the Sky Bridge Loop since they are a short drive from each other.

The trail slightly descends to the arch, with many rocks and roots to navigate. There is also a small campsite off the path so that you might see a tent set up.

Whistling Arch is a smaller arch (about 4 feet high), but it is still enjoyable to see. Kids might enjoy climbing around the base of the arch.

If you continue just past the arch a few hundred feet, you’ll come to a beautiful cliff overlook. It’s worth the extra steps for the view!

Princess Arch

• Trail Location: Chimney Top Rock Road in Daniel Boone National Forest (Trail #233)
• Trail Length: .5-miles out-and-back to bottom of arch; 1 mile out-and-back to top of arch
• Trail Difficulty: Easy

The Princess Arch Trail is another short and sweet hike in the Red River Gorge. It’s perfect to combine with the Chimney Top Trail, as both are accessed from the same parking area.

If you only hike to the bottom of the arch, it’s a .5 miles out and back. The trail is pretty easy, with a slight descent.

At 32 feet across, Princess Arch is one of the smaller arches in the Daniel Boone National Forest, but still beautiful in its own right.

You can continue on the trail to the top of the arch, adding another .5-miles to the length. There are some points along that trail where you can see the gorge through the trees.

Visitor Tip: To access the parking area for the Princess Arch and Chimney Top trails, you’ll have to drive 3.5 miles of unpaved road. There are several potholes and bumps along the road, so keep that in mind when choosing your vehicle for your trip!

Chimney Top

• Trail Location: Chimney Top Rock Road in Daniel Boone National Forest (Trail #235)
• Trail Length: .75-miles out-and-back
• Trail Difficulty: Easy

Chimney Top Trail leads to a fantastic overlook 400 feet above the Red River, giving visitors a good perspective of how the area was formed.

This easy trail is about .75-miles out and back. The path is paved for about half the course. The other half is relatively flat, with occasional rocks and roots to navigate.

It’s not a wheelchair-friendly trail, but you might be able to use a stroller along the path that can handle some off-roading.

From the overlook, you can see parts of the Red River to your right and Half Moon Rock to your left. Chimney Top Rock is also a great place to catch the sunset. It’s one of the best things to do in Red River Gorge!

Grays Arch

• Trail Location: Grays Arch Picnic Area via Tunnel Ridge Road in Daniel Boone National Forest (Trail #205)
• Trail Length: 2 miles, out and back
• Trail Difficulty: Moderate due to stairs and steep incline closer to the arch

Grays Arch is one of the largest arches in Red River Gorge (and the largest one on this list!). The arch spans 80 feet across and is 50 feet high.

The trail starts at the Grays Arch picnic area, which has picnic tables and vault toilets at the trailhead. This is a popular area, so if you plan to hike on a weekend, arrive early or later in the day.

The Grays Arch trail is about 2 miles, out and back. You can combine it with the Rough Trail and Rush Ridge Trail to make a longer loop.

The trail is pretty flat and easy for the first half of the trail, although there is a slight descent with rocks and roots to navigate.

However, the trail becomes more moderate to difficult once you reach the stairs. There are multiple staircases down to the bottom of the trail.

Once at the bottom, you might see a waterfall to your right. However, you’ll definitely see Grays Arch up towards your left!

At that point, the trail is a bit of a scramble up the rocks, but it’ll bring you directly underneath the arch.

This was one of my favorite hikes in Red River Gorge due to the size and scale of the rocks and arch. You’ll never feel so small!

Visitor Tip: To access the Grays Arch Picnic Area, you’ll have to drive along a one-mile-long unpaved road. There are several pot holes and bumps along the road.

Rock Bridge

• Trail Location: Rock Bridge Picnic Area via Rock Bridge Road in Daniel Boone National Forrest (Trail #207)
• Trail Length: 1.5-mile loop
• Trail Difficulty: Moderate

Only one arch in Red River Gorge crosses over the water, and that is the Rock Bridge! We loved this trail because it also leads to a waterfall.

Creation Falls, a small waterfall right before Swift Camp Creek, draws many visitors to this fun Red River Gorge hike.

At the base of Creation Falls is a small natural pool (not too deep) that visitors like to wade in to cool off on a hot day. It’s a fun thing to do in Red River Gorge!

Its sandy beach is perfect for sitting and enjoying a snack or lunch. Remember to carry out all of your trash!

The Rock Bridge Trail is on the easy side of moderate in difficulty.

We recommend going counterclockwise on the trail to start with stairs and do a more gradual ascent at the end of the loop. Plus, the Rock Bridge and waterfall are closer to the end of the loop, so you’ll have a shorter walk back to the parking lot.

This is another popular trail, and the parking lot fills up quickly, especially at midday when visitors want to enjoy the cool water at the waterfall’s base. Arrive early or much later in the day for easy parking and a quieter hiker.

Visitor Tip: The parking area for Rock Bridge Trail is at the end of a 3-mile-long unpaved road. There are several pot holes and bumps along the road, so keep that in mind when choosing your vehicle for your trip!

Inside Natural Bridge State Resort Park

Original Trail

• Trail Location: Next to the gift shop and parking lot by the Swinging Bridge at Natural Bridge State Resort Park
• Trail Length: .75 miles to the base of the Natural Bridge arch
• Trail Difficulty: Moderate

The Original Trail at Natural Bridge State Resort Park is the shortest way to get to the base of the arch.

The trailhead is accessed by the gift shop and offers a steady ascent up wooden and stone steps along the way. The trail isn’t too difficult, but it would be considered moderate due to the incline.

There are several places to rest along the trail, including a few shelters that were built in the 1930s.

Once you reach the base of the arch, follow around the other side to the narrow stone steps. These will lead you to the top of the arch to join the Laurel Ridge Trail (see more info below).

Laurel Ridge Trail

• Trail Location: On top of Natural Bridge at Natural Bridge State Resort Park
• Trail Length: .75 miles from top of the arch to Lover’s Leap
• Trail Difficulty: Easy

Once you are on top of the Natural Bridge arch, you’ll want to take the Laurel Ridge Trail to get some of the best views of the area and the arch itself!

The Laurel Ridge Trail is mostly flat and easy. It leads across the arch to the Sky Lift (another option to get to the top of the arch).

Continue to follow the trail until you reach an outcropping. This is the Natural Bridge Overlook. Seeing it after you’ve been on top of it is incredible!

You can continue the trail to Lover’s Leap for more beautiful views. However, you have a few options if you want to return to the Hemlock Lodge or parking area.

First, you can climb down the very steep steps at Needle’s Eye or the Devil’s Gulch. Both of these could be difficult to do with young children.

From here, you’ll connect to the Battleship Rock Trail (see more info below).

The other option is to walk back down to the bottom of the arch. Then you can return to the parking lot via the Original Trail or by taking the Balanced Rock Trail.

Henson Arch

• Trail Location: Whittleton Campground at Natural Bridge State Resort Park (just past the bathhouse)
• Trail Length: .5 miles out and back
• Trail Difficulty: Moderate

Henson Arch Trail is one of the shortest hikes in the Red River Gorge, but it is still worth doing.

This .5-mile out-and-back trail heads up a steady incline to a small arch in a grotto/cave. As a bonus, there is also a small waterfall in the cave!

To access the trailhead, enter the campground and park near the check-in station. From there, it’s a short walk past the bathhouse to the trail.

The trail is short but steep in some sections. However, as you get closer to the arch and waterfall, it starts to level off.

Once you reach the grotto, take the ladder-style staircase down to the bottom. Be careful. The steps might be wet from the spray.

Good to Know: Due to the grade and makeup of the trail, it can be very slippery after rain.

At the bottom, look up! You can see how it’s actually an arch, not just a hole in the ground. And you’ll get a better look at the waterfall.

Of course, I love hiking! And I enjoy it even more when I have the kids in tow. They also enjoy exploring nature, climbing rocks, and taking in incredible views as much as I do.

There are so many great, family-friendly hiking destinations in the eastern United States. Whether you’re looking for waterfall hikes, hikes with views, or even beautiful natural formations like stone arches, you can find them on the East Coast!

We’ve been on some fantastic trips where hiking was the primary focus. And we had a blast! Some of our favorites include Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina and the Finger Lakes in New York.

The guide below shares the best places to hike with kids on the East Coast, as well as other activities at each destination, so you can make the most of your getaway. Which destination is on your bucket list?

Prepare for Your East Coast Hikes

It’s always best to be prepared for any hike. This is what we recommend for these East Coast hikes:

• Shoes: The trails below can be rocky and steep. As always, we recommend sturdy hiking boots or trail sneakers.
• Water Bottles: Regardless of the hike’s duration, you’ll always want a water bottle on hand, especially during the hotter months.
• Bug Spray and Sunscreen: Mosquitoes and gnats can be in full force, depending on the time of year. A good insect repellant will make the hike more pleasant.
• Clothing: When hiking, you’ll want to dress in layers. It’s usually cooler in the mornings, but you’ll heat up as you walk along. Wearing T-shirts under lightweight zip-up sweatshirts is ideal in the spring and fall.
• Snacks or Picnic Lunch: Depending on which trails you choose and the time of day, you’ll want to have a few snacks or even a lunch ready to eat!
• Hand Sanitizer / Hand Wipes: You never know when you need to wipe down! Especially before eating.
• Bandages: Isn’t it inevitable that someone will fall and scrape a knee on a rock? It’s always good to have some bandages or even a small first aid kit on hand.
• Backpack: To carry everything in. Need I say more? I prefer one with side pockets to hold the water bottles and a front pocket to hold the wipes and bandages. But you can use whatever you own.
• Detailed Map: Most of the hiking destinations below have well-signed trails. However, it’s always good to have a map of the area before you visit, especially if cell service is not good.

Be a Responsible Visitor

Remember, as you visit these East Coast hiking destinations, to respect nature. Stay on established paths, pack out your trash (including food waste), and leave the area as you found it.

Best Family-Friendly East Coast Hiking Destinations:

Catskills, New York

The Catskills in New York are a great family-friendly East Coast hiking destination. The region offers a variety of kid-friendly trails that promise both fun and great views.

Best Hikes in the Catskills

One must-do hike is to Kaaterskill Falls, a 260-foot waterfall your little ones will love splashing around at the base. There are over 400 steps down to the bottom, so keep that in mind when planning your hike. You can always view the waterfall from the observation platform.

Another fun hike for families is Sunset Rock, where you can enjoy gorgeous views of the Catskill Mountains.

The short and moderate trail makes it an ideal choice for young hikers. The summit is the perfect spot to enjoy a picnic lunch or snacks. It makes a great sunset hike, too!

Other Things to Do in the Catskills

There are plenty of other things to do in the Catskills if you want to take a break from hiking. We enjoyed visiting the Saugerties Lighthouse and exploring Opus40. There are also many places to ski nearby.

The Finger Lakes, New York

Hiking in the Finger Lakes region of New York is a fantastic adventure for young families looking to connect with nature. One of the best parts of the Finger Lakes is the numerous state parks and camping options. We especially enjoyed camping at Watkins Glen State Park.

Best Hikes in the Finger Lakes

Two must-visit spots for a memorable outdoor experience are Watkins Glen Gorge Trail and Taughannock Falls. They are two of the best waterfall hikes in the Finger Lakes.

The Watkins Glen Gorge Trail is a fun, relatively easy trail that takes you by (and under) dozens of waterfalls. The trail is just over a mile long. Visitors can take the trail back to the start, take the rim trail, or pay for a shuttle ride.

Taughannock Falls is a short and easy hike to the viewing area, making it accessible for all ages. Kids will love splashing around at the base of the 215-foot waterfall! You can even drive up to the overlook to get a different view.

A few other fun hikes are the gorge trails at Buttermilk Falls and Robert H. Treman State Parks. In the summer, the natural pools are open for swimming. It’s such a fun way to cool off after your hike.

Visitor Tip: The gorge trails in the Finger Lakes are usually closed from early November through mid-May due to snow/ice on the trail, so make sure you plan your trip when they are open!

Other Things to Do in the Finger Lakes With Kids

There are so many fun things to do in the Finger Lakes! Right near Taughannock Falls is the gorgeous Cayuga Nature Center with a six-story treehouse.

And, of course, you don’t want to miss the Corning Museum of Glass. It’s a science museum, history museum, and art museum all in one.

Poconos, Pennsylvania

The Poconos in Pennsylvania is a great hiking destination for families on the East Coast thanks to the many state parks, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, and the Appalachian Trail running through the area.

There are so many great hikes in the Poconos that it’s hard to choose only a few to highlight.

However, we love the hiking trails at the Delaware Water Gap, like Mount Minsi and George W Childs Park.

For other waterfall hikes, Bushkill Falls can’t be beaten. The trails are well-maintained, and there are other things to do, like gem mining, on-site.

Lastly, Hickory Run State Park has some of our favorite hiking trails in the Poconos, like Shades of Death, the trail to Hawk Falls, and the Boulder Field Trail.

Other Things to Do in the Poconos

The Poconos offers so many fun things to do. Some of our favorites include visiting Jim Thorpe and riding the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway in the fall.

Visiting an indoor waterpark like Camelback’s Aquatopia is another fun way to expend energy without worrying about the weather.

And for more outdoor fun, paintball games are always a good time.

C&O Canal National Historical Park, Maryland

C&O Canal National Historical Park is a perfect east coast hiking destination for young families to explore and one of our favorite places to hike in the fall.

There are many things to do, including biking, hiking, and enjoying the gorgeous Great Falls of the Potomac River. It’s also perfect for a day trip hike from DC.

Visitor Tip: The entrance fee to C&O Canal NHP is $20 per car. However, you can enter for FREE with your National Park Pass or the Every Kid Outdoors Pass.

Best Hikes at C&O Canal National Historical Park

One of the most popular trails at C&O Canal NHP is the Olmstead Island Bridges trail, also known as the Great Falls Trail.

It’s an easy, accessible trail that is a half-mile out-and-back. However, you must walk about a half-mile to and from the parking lot along the towpath, which makes the total trail length 1.5 miles.

The Billy Goat Trail Section A is a must-do for those feeling a bit more adventurous. This trail is rated difficult and requires a lot of rock scrambling, which includes a 50-foot ascent climb on a cliff.

The Billy Goat Trail Section A is a lot of fun but may not be suitable for younger kids or inexperienced hikers.

Other Things to Do at C&O Canal National Historical Park

In addition to hiking, visitors of C&O Canal NHP can enjoy biking along the towpath. You can actually bike into Washington, DC, 16 miles away! And during the summer months, the National Park Service offers boat rides along the canal.

The C&O Canal is a short drive into Washington, DC, where you can enjoy many of the FREE museums and attractions in the city. Or you could visit Arlington Cemetery.

Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

Harpers Ferry is a fantastic hiking destination on the East Coast for young families, thanks to the Appalachian Trail running through the historic town.

Best Hiking Trails in Harpers Ferry

One of the best hiking trails near Harpers Ferry is the Maryland Heights Trail. The 4.5-mile out-and-back trail is moderately difficult and leads to a gorgeous overlook of both the town and the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.

Another great trail near Harpers Ferry is the Loudon Heights Trail. At 6 miles long, it’s a bit longer than Maryland Heights, but it’s about the same difficulty. The overlook gives you a different perspective of the town and rivers.

Of course, you can also hike part of the Appalachian Trail that goes through town. It leads to the Jefferson Rock and more views of the Shenandoah River.

Other Things to Do in Harpers Ferry

Harpers Ferry is a fun town with historic buildings and fascinating museums run by the National Park Service. It’s easy to spend a day exploring the town before you embark on any hikes.

Nearby, you can tour the Antietam Battlefield. The battle is known as the single bloodiest day in American history, where more than 22,000 soldiers were killed or wounded.

Visitor Tip: Both Harpers Ferry and Antietam Battlefield have fees for entry. However, you can enter for FREE with your National Park Pass or the Every Kid Outdoors Pass.

Coopers Rock State Forest, West Virginia

Coopers Rock State Forest is a perfect destination for families looking for fun hikes they can do with young kids.

Best Hikes at Coopers Rock State Forest

The main draw to Coopers Rock is Coopers Rock Overlook. It’s a short, easy trail leading to a beautiful overlook of the Cheat River Gorge and the surrounding area. The path to the overlook features one of the “Almost Heaven” swings, so don’t forget to grab a photo!

The 1.5-mile Rattlesnake/Rock City Loop is fun for kids and parents alike. This scenic trail takes you around massive boulders that feel like a rock maze. Although it is relatively easy, there are some steep sections and rocky parts that some might find tricky to navigate.

Lastly, the Ravens Rocks trail is another popular hike that leads to a gorgeous view. The 2.5-mile out-and-back trail is considered moderate but with some steep sections.

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Of all the hiking destinations on this list, Shenandoah National Park is probably the most popular. In fact, it’s one of the best east coast locations for a family vacation.

Shenandoah National Park is HUGE. Skyline Drive, the main road through the park, is just over 100 miles. Driving through the whole park can take three hours, minimum.

The hikes we share below focus on the middle section of the park. However, there are some excellent trails in the other areas of the park, too, including some easy hikes that are family-friendly!

Visitor Tip: The National Park Service charges an entry fee for Shenandoah National Park. However, you can enter for FREE with your National Park Pass or the Every Kid Outdoors Pass.

Best Hikes in Shenandoah National Park

We loved hiking the Dark Hollow Falls Trail. This 1.4-mile out-and-back trail leads to several waterfalls. The only downside to the trail is the elevation change! It’s a pretty steep trail that descends from the trailhead, so you must walk back up at the end.

Another must-visit trail is the Hawksbill Mountain Trail, which leads to the highest peak in the park. It’s a moderately challenging mile to the summit (and then back down again), but it’s worth it to look out over the endless Blue Ridge Mountains.

Other Things to Do Near Shenandoah National Park

There are so many things to do in the Shenandoah Valley! We love all of the caves you can visit near the park, like Shenandoah Caverns and Luray Caverns.

There are also fun things to do at Massanutten Resort, like skiing and snow tubing during the winter months and enjoying the waterpark all year round.

Charlottesville is also fun to visit, especially Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello.

Red River Gorge, Kentucky

The Red River Gorge in Kentucky is a vast geological area encompassing more than 29,000 acres and over 100 natural stone arches, making it a fantastic east coast hiking destination.

Best Hikes in Red River Gorge

It’s hard to narrow it down, but if we had to choose some of the best family-friendly hikes in Red River Gorge, the Original Trail at Natural Bridge State Resort Park would be a top choice.

It’s only .75 miles from the parking lot to the base of the bridge. But, of course, you’ll want to climb to the top and take the Laurel Ridge Trail to the bridge overlook.

Another fantastic hiking trail in Red River Gorge is Gray’s Arch. It’s a 2.5-mile out-and-back trail that starts off easy and gets more difficult as you reach the arch. At 80 feet across and 50 feet high, Gray’s Arch is one of the largest in the Red River Gorge.

As one of Red River Gorge’s most popular waterfall trails, you don’t want to miss Rock Bridge Trail to Creation Falls. The 1.5-mile trail is on the easy side of moderate and leads to a fun waterfall and the only natural arch that spans water in Red River Gorge.

Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina

If you’re looking for a fun hiking destination in North Carolina, you can’t beat Grandfather Mountain in Linville.

This privately run park has some great hiking trails, a nature center, and the famous mile-high swinging bridge. Plus, it’s right near the Blue Ridge Parkway, giving you plenty of hiking trails in the area.

Visitor Tip: Grandfather Mountain charges admission for entry to the park, but it’s worth the price for everything that is included.

Best Hikes at Grandfather Mountain

The Grandfather Trail Loop hike is 1.5 miles long and moderately easy. The trail is rocky and can be steep in sections, but overall, it’s a fun trail that offers some lovely views.

Many people choose to hike Grandfather Mountain’s Grandfather Trail to Calloway Peak because it’s a challenging 5-mile out-and-back trail that incorporates ladders and ropes to ascend over large boulders.

You can shorten the trail to a 2-mile loop if you head to MacRae Peak and then take the Underwood Trail back.

Other Things to Do at Grandfather Mountain

You can’t visit Grandfather Mountain without crossing the mile-high swinging bridge! The 228-foot-long bridge is only 80 feet above the ground, but it’s a mile high in elevation, giving you gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains.

Grandfather Mountain also has a nature center, which is included with park admission. Kids and adults can learn more about the mountain, animals, plant life, and geology. The center has over a dozen interactive exhibits inside and a botanical garden outside.

There are plenty of trails to choose from in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

One of the most popular trails is the hike to Kuwohi (formerly Clingmans Dome). Although it’s a paved trail, the incline makes it moderate. Thankfully, there are benches along the path for rest breaks.

Laurel Falls is a famous waterfall trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The 2.3-mile trail is an easy hike leading to an 80-foot waterfall. This is an excellent trail to do with young kids.

Lastly, the Alum Cave Trail is a moderately complex trail that may be best for families with older kids. This 4.4-mile hike brings you past Arch Rock and Inspiration Point before reaching the Alum Cave Bluffs.

The Red River Gorge geological area spans approximately 29,000 acres, primarily situated within Daniel Boone National Forest. It’s a large place with many fun activities to enjoy, especially if you’re an outdoor enthusiast.

There are plenty of things to do in Red River Gorge, making it a perfect getaway.

Hiking in Red River Gorge is one of the main reasons visitors come from all over. They want to see some of the over 100 natural arches, including some of the more famous ones, such as Natural Bridge and Grays Arch.

During our visit, we mainly focused on hiking. However, we also enjoyed some of the other fun things to do at Red River Gorge, like the Gorge Underground, a boat ride through an abandoned mine.

Take the Sky Lift to Natural Bridge

One of the best things to do in Red River Gorge is take the Sky Lift to Natural Bridge. This 11-minute ride takes you to the top of the massive arch in Natural Bridge State Resort Park.

While on the arch, walk the Laurel Ridge Trail (flat and easy) to the bridge overlook and Lover’s Leap. You can also hike back down to the parking area or take the Sky Lift on the return.

The Sky Lift operates seasonally, usually from April through November.

Good to Know: The Sky Lift seats two people per chair, so if you have an odd number in your party, someone will have to ride alone.

Take a Boat Ride Through an Abandoned Mine

One of the coolest (literally!) things to do in Red River Gorge is boating through an abandoned limestone mine.

The Gorge Underground offers kayak and classic boat ride tours through the large mine that are about an hour long. Or, if you want to be on the water a little longer, you can take a deluxe kayak tour on a clear light-up kayak. They last about 1.5 hours.

One of the best things about this activity in Red River Gorge is it can be done in any weather! Whether its raining, snowing, or too hot to be outside, Gorge Underground is always ready to go.

Good to know: Dress warmly! The mine is about 55 degrees year-round and can feel cold very fast, especially if you have short sleeves and shorts on.

Explore Natural Bridge State Resort Park

Though some may opt to take the Sky Lift to Natural Bridge, others might be more interested in hiking to the arch.

Several hikes in Natural Bridge State Resort Park lead to Natural Bridge, including the Original Trail and the Battleship Rock Trail.

In addition to hiking, Natural Bridge State Resort Park also has a swimming pool (guests of the resort can swim for FREE and outside guests can pay a small fee to access the pool). You can also kayak or canoe on Mill Creek Lake and play miniature golf.

Take a Waterfall Hike in Daniel Boone National Forest

There are several waterfalls in Daniel Boone National Forest, but many are off-trail and generally hard to get to. However, one of the best hikes in Red River Gorge leads to a beautiful waterfall and natural pool.

The Rock Bridge Trail in Daniel Boone National Forest is moderate and short, about 1.5 miles, and leads to Creation Falls.

This small waterfall attracts many visitors who come to splash and play at its base. Some will even climb about halfway up the waterfall and slide down into the water.

The natural pool is shallow enough to wade in, with some deeper areas where little kids can enjoy splashing around. And the small sandy beach is the perfect place to enjoy a snack or picnic lunch.

Watch the Sunset at Chimney Top

One of the easiest hikes in Red River Gorge leads you to a beautiful place to watch the sunset. Chimney Top Trail is .75-miles, out-and-back, and is mostly flat. The trail leads to a gorgeous overlook 400 feet above the Red River with views of Half Moon Rock to your left.

The overlook faces west, providing the perfect spot to watch the sun set behind the trees. Remember to bring flashlights to light the path back to the parking lot.

Where to Stay in Red River Gorge

Red River Gorge is a remote location, so there are only a few hotels and motels in the area. We recommend the lodge at Natural Bridge State Resort Park if you’re looking for a hotel-style stay.

However, the area has several places to rent cabins and homes. We recommend staying in Pine Ridge, Rogers, or Slade to be close to many of the activities mentioned above in Red River Gorge.

Even though the Red River Gorge area is remote, there are still plenty of great places to eat in the area. Here are a few highly rated options:

Sky Bridge Station

Sky Bridge Station is the ideal stop after you hike in the Daniel Boone National Forest. Located at 8 KY-715, Pine Ridge, KY 41360, this restaurant offers local beers on tap and gourmet hot dogs. Across the street, you can grab an ice cream treat for dessert at The Brick!

Red River Rockhouse

This farm-to-table restaurant in Red River Gorge features burgers, burritos, and, of course, bourbon! Located at 4000 KY-11, Campton, KY 41301, it’s not far from Natural Bridge State Resort Park or Southeastern Mountain Guides, giving you the perfect place to fuel up after your outdoor activities.

Miguels Pizza

A local favorite, Miguels Pizza is one of the most-recommended places to eat in Red River Gorge. Their customizable pizza fills you up after a long day out in the woods. Chimney Top Rock and Princess Arch Parking and Bathrooms

Getting There

The parking area for the Princess Arch and Chimney Top is at the end of a 3.5-mile-long, unpaved road. You will have to drive slowly to avoid the many potholes and bumps along the road.

To get to the parking lot, turn onto Chimney Top Rock Road from Sky Bridge Road (Ky 715), in Pine Ridge, Kentucky.

Parking For Chimney Top Rock and Princess Arch Trails

The parking lot for the Chimney Top Rock and Princess Arch trails is very large. There are spaces for at least 20 cars or more.

As always, popular trails like these can get crowded on weekends and mid-afternoons, so it’s always best to visit in the morning or early evening. When we hiked the trails, we arrived around 4:30 pm, and there were only a few cars in the parking lot.

Amenities at Chimney Top Rock Trailhead

Like the Grays Arch parking area, there is a vault toilet at the Chimney Top Rock parking area. There is no running water.

Chimney Top Rock Trail

Chimney Top Trail leads to a fantastic overlook 400 feet above the Red River, giving visitors a good perspective of how the area was formed. It’s a perfect place to watch the sunset, one of our favorite things to do in the area.

Trailhead

The trailhead to Chimney Top trail is on the southern part of the parking loop and is clearly marked with the trail name and distance. It says 1/4 mile on the trailhead sign, but we clocked at .35 miles to the overlook. No matter, it is still short and sweet!

What to Expect on the Trail

This easy trail is about .7 miles out and back. The path is paved for about half the course. The other half is relatively flat, with occasional rocks and roots to navigate.

I’ve read websites that state this is a wheelchair-friendly trail, but I would argue it is not. The paved path stops about halfway through the trail, and then afterward, the trail has many rocks and roots in the path, as well as a few natural “steps”. Although it’s not a wheelchair-friendly trail, you might be able to use an off-roading stroller.

Overlook

The overlook is about 400 feet above the Red River, offering gorgeous views of the surrounding area. I’d argue it’s one of the best views in Red River Gorge. It’s surrounded by wooden and stone fences, with many warnings not to climb over the fence.

From the overlook, you can see parts of the Red River to your right and Half Moon Rock to your left. Chimney Top Rock is also a great place to catch the sunset! Just be careful as you walk back to the car of steep drop-offs.

Princess Arch Trail

Princess Arch is a flat-ish natural stone arch. You can either take the trail to the bottom or continue along the trail to the top of the arch. At 32 feet across, Princess Arch is one of the smaller arches in the Daniel Boone National Forest, but it is still worth hiking to!

Trailhead

The trailhead to Princess Arch is on the north side of the Chimney Top Rock parking area. Cars may be blocking the entrance.

What to Expect on the Trail

The Princess Arch Trail is a short and sweet hike in the Red River Gorge.

The trail itself is uneventful. Although it is not paved like the Chimney Top trail, it’s very easy, with only a few rocks and roots to navigate around.

It’s only about .25 miles to the bottom of the arch. You can stop there or continue another .25 miles to the top of the arch. From the top of the arch, you can either backtrack the way you came or finish the loop to the main trail. We backtracked since the other trail wasn’t obvious.

At the Arch

The Princess Arch is fun to explore. The kids climbed up on the stone to the top of the arch while I took the trail to the top. There are several nooks around the base and some carvings in the stone on the arch. (This goes against the Leave No Trace principles, so please don’t add any of your own!)

For a short (about a 1/2-mile out and back) trail, the hike to Henson Arch was still fun and challenging. The steep grade (up to 20% in some sections) gives you a good workout as you make your way to the arch. And the stairs down to the sinkhole aren’t something you see everywhere!

We did the hike to Henson Arch after a morning of completing the Original Trail to Natural Bridge. It didn’t take too long to complete (less than 15 minutes to get to the arch), but it was still fun to do.

The Henson Arch Trail

As one of the shortest hikes in the Red River Gorge, Hensons Arch Trail is still worth doing, thanks to the unique feature of the sinkhole and waterfall. The trail leads to a small limestone arch at the entrance to a cave. The stairs lead down into a sinkhole where hikers can get a unique perspective of the and enjoy the cave-like atmosphere.

Trailhead for Henson Arch

You can find the Henson Arch trailhead just past the Whittleton Campground bathhouse. From the parking lot, walk towards the bathrooms and turn right before passing them. The trailhead is just a little further down, near two campsites.

After the trailhead, you’ll see a small wooden bridge. Turn left to continue on the trail.

What To Expect On the Trail to Henson Arch

This .6-mile out-and-back trail heads up a steady incline almost the entire way to the grotto and arch. It is very steep in some sections and can be very slippery if it just rained. Although it is a short trail, hiking poles could be beneficial. As you get closer to the arch and waterfall, it starts to level off.

Once you reach the sinkhole, take the ladder-style staircase down to the bottom. Use caution as the steps might be wet from the waterfall spray. We visited in July, and the water was pretty steady.

When you get to the bottom of the sinkhole, look up! You can see the arch formation a little more clearly.

Good to know: This is an out-and-back trail. So you’ll have to climb the steps to get out and navigate the steep trail down as you head back to the trailhead.

Henson Arch Wrap-Up

We enjoyed the short hike to Henson Arch. Walking down into the sinkhole and having rock surround you was fun. We loved exploring and looking around the small area and enjoyed the cool air from the waterfall (it was hot when we were there!). The hike shouldn’t take you too long (maybe 30 minutes) and is an excellent addition to any of the other hikes in Red River Gorge.

Parking for the Hike to Sky Bridge in Daniel Boone National Forest

To get to Sky Bridge Arch, follow KY 715/ Sky Bridge Road until you reach the road leading to Sky Bridge.

There is a large parking area at the end of the road that can easily hold 20 or more cars. This is a popular trail, so it might be crowded on weekends. We visited in the middle of the week in July and practically had the trail to ourselves.

There is a vault toilet restroom at Sky Bridge Arch. There is no running water.

Hiking to Sky Bridge in Kentucky

Trailhead for Sky Bridge

We recommend completing the trail counter-clockwise, taking the stairs to the bottom of the arch first. There are about 75 steps, and it’s more fun to walk down them than save them for the end of the hike. Plus, this way, you’ll end your hike with views of the Red River Gorge from the top of the Sky Bridge.

Visitor Tip: For an easy walk to the top of Sky Bridge, take the paved path. It’s about 500 feet to the top of the arch, and mostly flat.

What To Expect On the Hike to Sky Bridge Arch

Take the stairs down to the bottom of Sky Bridge. You’ll see the beginning of the arch formation as soon as you reach the bottom.

Follow the trail a few hundred feet, if that, to the bottom of the arch. This was the first arch hike we did in Red River Gorge, so we were impressed by its size. Of course, we hadn’t done Grays Arch yet!

The bottom of the arch is a perfect spot to cool off in the shade (if you’re visiting in July like we did) and grab a few photos.

Once you’re done below the arch, continue to follow the trail. You’ll be tempted to go up some unmarked trails that were made by impatient hikers who wanted to get to the top of the arch.

But do yourself a favor and follow the trail to the end. There, you’ll have a beautiful overlook before you head up the stone steps to the top of the Sky Bridge.

On Top of Sky Bridge Arch

The trail continues along the top of the arch. From there, you have gorgeous vistas of the surrounding forest and can see the gorge formed by the Red River.

It’s mostly flat on top of the arch, and the trail connects to a paved path, so it’s an easy walk back to the parking lot.

Get a View of Sky Bridge

If you want to see Sky Bridge Arch from a distance, hop back in your car and follow the road a short distance. You’ll make a left onto Forest Road 245 A. There is limited parking along the loop.

From the loop, there is a short trail that leads to an overlook of Sky Bridge Arch. During the summer, it was almost impossible to see the arch, with the trees and brush in the way. But I can imagine November – March, you should be able to see it clearly.

The path to the overlook isn’t paved, but it’s not difficult. We didn’t measure the length, but it can’t be more than 500 feet.

Other Hikes Near Sky Bridge Arch

Whistling Arch

About a mile down the road from the Sky Bridge parking area, you’ll find the parking area for Whistling Arch. We did this short and easy trail after completing Sky Bridge Arch. It’s about a half-mile, out and back, and leads to one of the smallest arches in Red River Gorge. You can continue on the trail a hundred feet to a pretty overlook.

Angel Windows

The trailhead to Angel Windows is about two miles from Sky Bridge Arch on Sky Bridge Road/ KY 715. I’m not sure how I missed this trail, but somehow I did, and I’m a little bummed about that. However, like the Whistling Arch trail, it’s a short and sweet, half-mile out-and-back trail. But this easy trail leads to two arches instead of one!

We loved the hike to Sky Bridge Arch! It was our first stop in Red River Gorge, and it was the perfect way to introduce us to the gorgeous stone arches in the area. Although it’s short, it still is worth visiting.

One of the best things about the area is the multitude of hikes available, ranging from easy to difficult. It’s the perfect destination whether you are new to hiking or have been hiking for a long time.

We loved our visit to Red River Gorge. We loved mixing some of the easy hikes with more difficult trails, which allowed us to see and do many things during our short visit.

If you are planning a trip to Red River Gorge but are nervous about trail difficulty, don’t be! I share some of the best easy hikes in Red River Gorge below. And most of them lead to the region’s renowned natural stone arches! So, they are great for everyone to try.

Things to Know Before You Hike in Red River Gorge

Dangerous Cliffs

There are some fantastic easy trails in Red River Gorge that almost anyone can do. However, some of these hikes lead to the top of tall arches, and cliff overlooks with no guards or railings. If you’re traveling with young children or animals, always keep them close to you.

Limited Cell Service

The Red River Gorge area has spotty cell service. On most of our hikes, we were able to maintain cell coverage about half of the time. It’s always a good idea to download a map before you head out on your hike.

Wildlife

Red River Gorge is home to many species of wildlife, including the occasional black bear and poisonous snakes. Always be aware of your surroundings and watch out for the wildlife.

Pets

Pets are allowed on the trails in Daniel Boone National Forest. They are not allowed on any of the Natural Bridge State Resort Park trails, with the exception of Henson Arch and Whittleton Trails.

5 Easy Hikes in Red River Gorge

Most of these easy trails in Red River Gorge are in the Daniel Boone National Forest and aren’t too far from each other. You can easily do four of these easy hikes in one day.

The last hike is in the Natural Bridge State Resort Park, requiring a chairlift ride to the top. It’s an easy trail, but not for those who fear heights!

The Sky Bridge Arch is one of the more well-known arches in Daniel Boone National Forest. It’s 75 feet long and 23 feet high. The Sky Bridge Loop is a popular hike in Daniel Boone National Forest in Red River Gorge. It’s only 3/4-mile, so it’s relatively short, and, aside from the stairs, it’s a relatively easy trail.

Good to know: There is another short trail around the corner that leads to an overlook of the Sky Bridge Arch. It was overgrown at the time of our hike, but it might be worth stopping at in the winter and early spring. That trail is also easy and very short.

If you want to keep this trail very easy, take the paved path from the parking lot to the top of the arch. It’s about a 500-foot walk. You could even take a stroller along the path.

However, for a bit of a longer hike that is slightly more challenging, you can head to the bottom of the arch first and then hike up to the top of the arch. There are several stairs to get to the bottom (75, according to the Forest Service).

The Sky Bridge Arch is one of the more prominent arches in Daniel Boone National Forest. It’s 75 feet long and 23 feet high.

After checking out the underside of the arch, you’ll want to continue on the trail to the point where you’ll have a beautiful overlook of the Red River Gorge. After that, you’ll find stone steps that will take you to the top of the Sky Bridge arch.

Whistling Arch is perfect to combine with the Sky Bridge Loop (see above). As one of the shortest and easiest hikes in Red River Gorge, it shouldn’t take too long to complete.

The trail to Whistling Arch has a slight descent to the arch (only 40 feet over .25 miles), but there are still many rocks and roots to navigate, so this is not considered an accessible trail.

Whistling Arch is a small arch (about 4 feet high, according to Kentucky Arches), but it is fun to see and climb around the base of the arch.

If you’d like a fun overlook, continue your hike past the arch about 100 feet. It’s not far, and it’s worth it for the view!

3. Princess Arch

The Princess Arch Trail is another short and easy hike in the Red River Gorge. It starts from the same parking area as the Chimney Top Trail (see below).

Good to Know: The road to the parking area for the Princess Arch and Chimney Top trails is 3.5 miles long and unpaved. There were several pot holes and bumps along the road when we visited.

This trail is very easy, especially if you only hike to the bottom of the arch. It’s about .5 miles out and back and offers a slight descent to the arch. Like the Whistling Arch trail, this is not an accessible trail due to the many rocks and roots along the path.

Princess Arch is only 32 feet across, making it one of the smallest arches in the Daniel Boone National Forest. But it was actually one of my favorites! It’s flat on the top, making it easy to walk on if you choose to continue on the trail. It’s about .5 miles to the top of the arch, and there are some points along that trail where you can see the gorge through the trees.

Chimney Top Trail leads to a gorgeous overlook that is 400 feet above the Red River. It gives you a good perspective of how the area was formed so many years ago.

The Chimney Top Trail is an easy “hike” that is about .75 miles out and back. It is paved for about half the trail. Although the other half is relatively flat, you still have occasional rocks and roots to navigate, so it’s not a wheelchair-friendly chair. You might be able to use a stroller along the path if it’s one that can handle off-roading.

From the overlook, you can see parts of the Red River to your right and Half Moon Rock to your left. Chimney Top Rock is also a great place to catch the sunset.

5. The Laurel Ridge Trail at Natural Bridge State Resort Park in Kentucky

The easiest way to access the Laurel Ridge Trail is to take the Sky Lift (for a fee). The Sky Lift drops you off about halfway through the trail, and from there, you can walk to the top of the Natural Bridge and then turn around and head to the overlook of the arch.

The trail’s total length is about 3/4 mile from Natural Bridge to Lover’s Leap, though you will backtrack some if you are coming from the Sky Lift.

You can also hike the Original Trail to the top of the arch to reach the Laurel Ridge Trail. However, the original trail is more moderate.

Other Trails in Red River Gorge

There are so many amazing trails to arches in Red River Gorge. They can range from easy, like the ones listed here, to very difficult. When we visited, we enjoyed some of the more moderate hikes, like the one to Grays Arch (one of the largest arches in Red River Gorge) and the Rock Bridge trail (which leads to a fun waterfall and wading hole).

Creation Falls: A Popular Red River Gorge Waterfall Trail

We loved our visit to Red River Gorge! The beautiful stone arches and fun trails make it one of the best places to hike with kids on the East Coast.

The only downside to Red River Gorge is the lack of official waterfall trails. When hiking with the kids, I like to keep it safe.

However, when researching Red River Gorge Waterfalls, the one that came up the most was Creation Falls. It’s a small but pretty waterfall along the Rock Bridge Trail in Daniel Boone National Forest.

Creation Falls isn’t too tall, about 12 feet, but it is still beautiful and offers a lot of fun at its base. And the “grottos” surrounding the falls add to its beauty, while the clear pool at its base is a fun place to cool off.

As one of the best things to do in Red River Gorge, you’ll want to do the Rock Bridge Trail to Creation Falls during your visit.

Parking for Rock Bridge Trail

The parking area for the Rock Bridge Trail to Creation Falls is at the end of a 3-mile-long, unpaved road filled with bumps and potholes. You’ll want a vehicle that can handle the uneven terrain.

Parking for the Rock Bridge Trail is a larger loop that can hold a few dozen vehicles. It fills up quickly on the weekends, especially in the summer, so arrive early.

There is also a picnic area and vault toilets at the parking lot.

Rock Bridge Trail

The Rock Bridge Trail is one of our favorite hikes in Red River Gorge. The semi-paved trail is steep and rocky in sections but is on the easy side of moderate. It was fun to do after completing the trail to Grays Arch since we could cool off in the pool by Creation Falls.

We went counter-clockwise on the trail, starting with stairs. This gave us a more gradual incline at the end of the loop.

If you go counter-clockwise, starting at the eastern trailhead, the Rock Bridge and waterfall will be closer to the end of the loop, so you’ll have a shorter walk back to the parking lot.

Creation Falls

At about 12 feet, Creation Falls waterfall isn’t the tallest waterfall in Red River Gorge. But it still makes an impression!

Following the Rock Bridge Fork, you’ll encounter the top of Creation Falls. You may be tempted to cross the water at that point and follow the makeshift path down to the beach area. However, the rocks could be slippery at that point.

Instead, continue down Rock Bridge Trail until you see Swift Camp Creek. There, you can go off the trail towards the creek and cross over to the beach area of Creation Falls.

The pool at the base of Creation Falls isn’t too deep. It was about 12-18 inches deep during our visit. However, wading around in the water and exploring the “grotto” area is still fun.

While we were there, some visitors took turns climbing up and sliding down Creation Falls. If you want to try that on your visit, make sure to wear something you don’t mind getting wet!

The Rock Bridge

Crossing the Swift Camp Creek, the Rock Bridge is the only natural arch in Red River Gorge that spans over water. The bridge is one of the park’s smaller natural arches, but it is still big enough to make an impression.

Other Hikes Near Rock Bridge Trail and Creation Falls

Swift Camp Creek Trail #219

The closest hike to the Rock Bridge Trail is the Swift Camp Creek Trail, which connects to the Rock Bridge Trail right near the Rock Bridge arch. The trail is considered difficult and is 7 miles long. It follows the Swift Camp Creek and terminates at Sky Bridge Road (KY 715).

Turtle Back Arch Trail

The Turtle Back Arch Trail is an unofficial trail that begins about 1 mile before the Rock Bridge parking area. The trail is a 2.2-mile, out-and-back hike that is considered difficult. You can also get to Turtle Back Arch via the Swift Camp Creek Trail.

The Natural Bridge arch is one of the biggest draws to Red River Gorge! As one of the largest arches in the region, it truly feels like a natural marvel.

We visited many arches in Red River Gorge, including the famous Rock Bridge and Grays Arch, and the hike to Natural Bridge was one of our favorites! The region is one of the best hiking destinations in the eastern United States.

Although there were some steep sections along the trail, it was easy enough for us to complete in less than 30 minutes, even with stops for photos.

Things to Know Before You Hike to Natural Bridge in Red River Gorge

Dangerous Cliffs

The Natural Bridge in Red River Gorge is beautiful! However, remember there are no guards or railings on top of the arch. You’ll want to keep kids away from the edges and within arm’s reach, especially small ones.

Hike the Original Trail to Natural Bridge in Kentucky

The Original Trail is the shortest trail to the base of the Natural Bridge Arch. At .75 miles, it is less than 30 minutes to reach the bottom of the arch, and it’s one of our favorite hiking trails in Red River Gorge.

The Original Trail starts by the gift shop, just up a few stairs from the parking area.

What to Expect on The Original Trail to Natural Bridge

The Original Trail is on the easy side of moderate. There are both wooden and stone steps along the trail and a steady ascent as you get closer to the arch.

If you need a break, there are several places to rest along the trail, including a few shelters built in the 1930s.

There are a few splits along the trail where you can connect to the Battleship Rock Trail. We recommend staying on the Original Trail to the base and returning via the Battleship Rock Trail (more info below).

The Base of Natural Bridge

Once you reach the base of the arch, you’ll want to sit and enjoy the magnitude of the arch! It’s hard to capture in photos how large it really is.

If you want to climb to the top of the arch, follow the trail under the arch and to the left. There, you will find a stone staircase leading you to the Laurel Ridge Trail and the top of the arch.

Once you’ve reached the Natural Bridge Arch, you’ll want to continue on the Laurel Ridge Trail for some fantastic views! This flat, easy trail leads to a beautiful overlook of the Natural Bridge.

Getting to the Laurel Ridge Trail

You can access the Laurel Ridge Trail in several ways. First, from the base of the Natural Bridge arch, you’ll climb the stone steps to the top of the arch.

Another option is to take the Battleship Rock Trail to the Devil’s Gulch or Needle’s Eyes and climb the stairs to Laurel Ridge Trail.

Lastly, you can take the Sky Lift (for a fee). The Sky Lift drops you off about halfway through the trail.

What to Expect on the Laurel Ridge Trail

The Laurel Ridge Trail is a flat 3/4 mile trail leading from the Natural Bridge arch to Lover’s Leap. Follow the trail for beautiful views of the park and the Natural Bridge. Once you’ve seen all of the beautiful views, you can either backtrack down the Original Trail, take the Sky Lift down, or climb down the Needle’s Eye or Devil’s Gulch.

We chose to climb down Devil’s Gulch. It was steep, but we went slowly and held on to the railings.

Other Things to Do at Natural Bridge State Resort Park

Sky Lift to Natural Bridge

One of the most popular things to do in Red River Gorge is the Sky Lift to the Natural Bridge. It’s perfect for those who can’t or don’t want to hike to the top.

The Sky Lift at Natural Bridge typically runs weekends in March and then daily from April through mid-November as weather allows.

You can purchase round-trip or one-way tickets, so if you want to hike back down, you can! You’ll want to take either the Hood’s Branch or Rock Garden trails.
