The Goat Hill Overlook trail is a one-mile out-and-back trail featuring a gravel and dirt path with a gradual incline. It’s easy enough for almost anyone to do, and the views are beautiful. From the top, you can see New Hope, the New Hope-Lambertville Bridge, and even further in Pennsylvania.

Prepare For Your Visit to the Goat Hill Overlook

Parking

There is a large, paved parking lot at the trailhead for Goat Hill Overlook. This is a nice upgrade from the smaller lot a few years ago. The current lot holds about two dozen cars and even has designated handicapped parking spaces.

Because it is an easy trail, it is also very popular. Try to visit early in the morning or during the week if possible. It also makes a great spot to watch the sunset.

Trail to Goat Hill Overlook

  • Trail Location: Off George Washington Road in Lambertville, NJ
  • Trail Length: 1 mile, out and back
  • Trail Difficulty: Easy – the trail is wide and flat, made mostly of gravel and dirt.
  • Elevation Gain: 90 feet
  • Dog Friendly: Yes

Trailhead

The trailhead is on the western side of the parking lot, near the handicapped parking spaces. A barrier crosses the trailhead to stop cars from driving past that point, but hikers can walk around to continue along the trail.

Along the Trail

It’s an easy half-mile to the overlook. The trail is uneventful, primarily flat, and has a gravel and dirt base. In the summertime, there are plenty of wineberry and wild blackberry bushes to pick from.

Along the main trail, you’ll see several rogue trails. These old trails are not marked or maintained but lead to various overlooks of the Delaware River. Visitors also like to use a rogue trail to shorten their walk to and from the overlook. This trail is really steep, so it’s better to stay on the main path.

At the Overlook

You’ll know you’ve arrived at the overlook when you reach the large clearing. From here, you can see the New Hope-Lambertville Bridge and New Hope across the Delaware River. It’s a beautiful view any time of year, but you’ll be able to see more after the trees have lost their leaves.

Bring a picnic blanket and some snacks to sit and enjoy the view of the river and Pennsylvania in the distance.

Other Hikes Near Goat Hill Overlook

This area of New Jersey has some fun trails that overlook the Delaware River. The trails at Ted Stiles Preserve (Baldpate Mountain) are fun. And Milford Bluffs has some great trails that lead to an overlook.

A little further away, you can enjoy another easy trail in Princeton at the Institute Woods.
