Pinnacle Rock is a beautiful geologic feature in southern West Virginia. And you can enjoy a view near the top of the rock using the Overlook Trail at Pinnacle Rock State Park.
Although the trail to the overlook is not accessible, it’s still easy enough for almost anyone to do. Visitors will encounter several stone steps with a metal handrail that leads them to the overlook. It’s short enough that once you start huffing and puffing from the stairs, you’ve already reached the top!
If you’re considering visiting this beautiful rock formation, the guide below shares everything you’ll need to know.

Prepare For Your Visit to Pinnacle Rock

Park Fees
Like other state parks in West Virginia, including some of our favorites, like Lost River and Beartown, Pinnacle Rock State Park is free to visit.
Parking
A decently sized parking lot at the main entrance to Pinnacle Rock State Park holds about two dozen or more cars. This lot is accessed from Coal Heritage Road. This is where you want to park to access the trail to the Pinnacle Rock overlook.
On the other side of the park is a second, smaller lot next to Jimmy Lewis Lake, located on Pinnacle Lake Road.
Amenities at Pinnacle Rock State Park
At the main entrance off Coal Heritage Road, visitors will find several picnic tables (some under a large pavilion) and bathrooms with running water. They can access these amenities via stairs or an accessible path.
There is also a small playground next to the pavilion.
We did not visit the Jimmy Lewis Lake area, but according to the park map, there are bathrooms.
Wear the Right Shoes
Although the Overlook Trail at Pinnacle Rock is short and easy, there are still uneven surfaces (that could be slippery depending on the time of year), so wear shoes with good grippy soles.
Wildlife
You may encounter bears, snakes, and other forms of wildlife during your visit to Pinnacle Rock. It’s always best to be aware of your surroundings.
You are also subject to mosquitoes and ticks, especially during the warmer months. It’s best practice to wear a good insect repellent.
