History of Coopers Rock
Coopers Rock gets its name from an 18th-century story.
According to local legend, a cooper (barrel maker) named Henry Cooper was chased by Native American tribes during the early days of European settlement in the region. He supposedly took shelter in the crevices of the rock, successfully evading his pursuers.
This story is similar to one about Sam’s Point Preserve in New York, so take it with a grain of salt!
