The hike to Big Schloss from Wolf Gap Recreation Area is a fun, challenging, but rewarding hike that is perfect any time of the year.

The 4.5-mile, out-and-back hike starts out steep, with up to 23% grade, but levels out once you reach the ridge. And boy, are the views worth the effort!

This trail is also very popular. We hiked to Big Schloss on Thanksgiving Day, and the trail was busy. I can’t imagine what it would be like on a weekend in the summer.

Big Schloss Trail: A Popular Hike in West Virginia

There are so many gorgeous hikes in West Virginia, and the hike to Big Schloss is one of them! With 270° views of West Virginia and Virginia at the top, it’s no wonder it’s a popular hike.

If you’re visiting nearby, including the Shenandoah Valley, you’ll want to add this 4.5-mile, out-and-back trail to your “to-do” list, as it’s one of the most beautiful in the area.

It would even make a great day-trip hike from Washington, DC, or Baltimore.

Things to Know Before You Hike Big Schloss

Limited Cell Service

We had spotty cell service along the trail to Big Schloss. There were spots with no service at all. It’s advisable to download a map before you drive to Wolf Gap Recreation Area.

Wildlife

West Virginia is home to many species of wildlife. On your hike, you might see black bears and poisonous snakes. Always be aware of your surroundings and watch out for wildlife.

Pets

Leashed pets are allowed on the trails in George Washington National Forest.

Be a Responsible Visitor

Remember as you visit Big Schloss at Wolf Gap Recreation Area to stay on established paths, pack out your trash (including food waste), and leave what you find behind.

Parking for the Hike to Big Schloss

There is a small parking lot at Wolf Gap Recreation Area to park for your hike to Big Schloss via Mill Mountain trail. The lot holds about 20-30 cars. This is a popular hiking destination, so plan on arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon to secure a parking spot, especially during the summer months and weekends.

Amenities

Wolf Gap Recreation Area does not have running water. However, it has two restrooms, each with a vault toilet and hand sanitizer.

Hike to Big Schloss via Mill Mountain Trail

Trail Location:The trailhead is on the northwest part of the paved loop at Wolf Gap Recreation area.
Trail Length: The trail to Big Schloss is just over 2 miles (4.5 miles out-and-back)
Trail Difficulty: The trail is on the harder side of moderate. It is very steep in the first half but then levels out somewhat for the second half to the top.

Trailhead to Big Schloss

You can find the trailhead to Big Schloss on the northwest part of the paved loop at Wolf Gap Recreation Area. The trailhead is a short walk from the parking lot, just past the restrooms.

The trail to Big Schloss is along the Mill Mountain Trail. It’s about two miles to the Big Schloss trail and another 1/4 mile to the summit.

What to Expect on the Trail to Big Schloss

The trail to Big Schloss has a steep grade for about the first half, ranging between 11% and 23%. However, there are several “flat” sections along the trail that are perfect for resting if necessary.

Once you reach the top of the ridge, the trail evens out a bit, making it much easier than the beginning portion.

You’ll want to stop along the top of the ridge to check out the views looking out towards Virginia.

Around the two-mile mark, you’ll see a sign directing you to the Big Schloss Trail. This trail is about 1/4-mile long and can also be steep in sections. But it’s worth it for those views!

At Big Schloss

As you reach the summit, you’ll find a bridge crossing a crevasse leading to the top. This area has many large boulders that are perfect for viewing from both sides.

If you head towards the right after you cross the bridge, you’ll find an easy way to get to the top of the rocks. Otherwise, if you head straight along the trail, you might have to attempt some bouldering to reach the top.

Other Hikes Near Wolf Gap Recreation Area

Tibbet Knob

Tibbet Knob is another fun hike from the Wolf Gap Recreation Area parking lot. Just cross Wolf Gap Road to reach the trailhead.

This out-and-back trail is about 3 miles long. Although the trail is shorter than the one to Big Schloss, this hike is also on the harder side of moderate due to the two rock scrambles along the trail. It’s worth it for the gorgeous overlook!

Mill Mountain Trail

After reaching Big Schloss, you can continue to follow the Mill Mountain Trail. The trail follows the ridgeline and eventually terminates at Little Schloss/Tuscarora Run. It’s not a trail with amazing views, but if you want to get a few more hiking miles in, then it’s the trail for you! Out and back, the Mill Mountain Trail is about 11.5 miles.

Other Things to Do Near Wolf Gap Recreation Area

The Wolf Gap Recreation Area straddles the West Virginia and Virginia border, making it close to many fun things to do in the Shenandoah Valley. We especially enjoyed touring the Shenandoah Caverns, about 30 minutes away.

We also loved our hike at Lost River State Park to one of the Almost Heaven swings at Cranny Crow. It’s less than an hour from the Wolf Gap Recreation Area.
