Who is Robert H. Treman?

Every time we visit a park named after someone, I get curious about them and what they did to deserve such an honor. Well, I am happy to tell you that Robert H. Treman definitely earned his namesake park!

Robert H. Treman is an Ithaca native who graduated from Cornell University. For most of his career, he served as a director and deputy governor of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. But that’s not why he has a park named after him. Treman was instrumental in developing many of the state parks in the Finger Lakes, including Buttermilk Falls, Taughannock Falls, and Enfield Glen (which was eventually named after him).

His family purchased the lands in the early 1900s, helped restore the paths, made design improvements, and even preserved an old flour mill. In 1920, they acquired an additional 387 acres and then donated the property (over 400 acres) to the state. After his death, the park was renamed in his honor.

During the last years of his life, Treman served as the first chairman of the state parks commission for the Finger Lakes region.

Multiple Trail Options

When visiting Robert H. Treman State Park, you have a few options to hike to Lucifer Falls.

The longest route is about 4.5 miles long. For this route, it’s recommended to start at the Lower Entrance and take the Gorge Trail to the Upper Entrance. For the full loop, don’t cross at the first bridge! We met someone along the trail who did that unknowingly. You’ll miss seeing Lucifer Falls from the top if you cross too early.

There are two shorter options leaving from the Upper Entrance. First, you can take the Red Pine Trail, connect to the Gorge Trail for a short bit, and then cross the bridge to the Rim Trail. This is about 1.5 miles, but I wouldn’t go this route. You won’t get the best views of Lucifer Falls this way.

For the best shorter option, you’ll want to do the Rim Trail/Gorge Trail loop. It’s just over 1 mile, takes you through some of the most beautiful parts of the Gorge Trail, and you’ll get to see Lucifer Falls from the top and the bottom. Prepare For Your Hike at Robert H. Treman State Park

Park Fees

Like other parks in the Finger Lakes, there is a fee to visit Robert H. Treman State Park. Don’t forget to keep your receipt! You can visit other state parks the same day, like Taughannock Falls and Buttermilk Falls, without having to pay an entry fee again.

Good to Know: Are you camping at one of the New York State Parks? If so, you’ll have FREE admission to all of the state parks during the duration of your stay.

Parking

There are multiple parking lots at the Lower Entrance of the park. During the summer months, those lots can fill up quickly because many visitors enjoy the swimming hole near the entrance.

The Upper Entrance has a large lot with plenty of parking.

Amenities

Bathrooms and picnic areas are available at both the Lower and Upper Entrances. The Lower Entrance also has a shower/changing house.

Seasonal Closures

The Gorge Trail and Rim Trail are typically closed from November through May due to icy and unsafe conditions. Check the park’s website for the most up-to-date information.

Pets

Leashed dogs are allowed on the trails at Robert H. Treman State Park.

Cellular Coverage

There is limited cell coverage at Robert H. Treman State Park. It’s always a good idea to download a park map before your visit.

Be Prepared

Although the loop to Lucifer Falls from the Upper Entrance is short, it’s always a good idea to have what you need with you, especially water!

Hike to Lucifer Falls at Robert H. Treman State Park

Which Direction?

When starting the trail to Lucifer Falls, you have a choice to make! Would you prefer to take the Rim Trail down to the bridge first or walk down the Gorge Trail?

We chose the Gorge Trail first, which goes against what I typically do. I always feel like, if you’re gonna have to hike up, you might as well have something good to look at while you’re doing it! Honestly, if I were to do this again, I’d probably take the Rim Trail first. But ultimately, the decision is yours.

Good to Know: At the start of the trails, you’ll see a stone bridge. Don’t take that route unless you want to walk the Red Pine Trail. Go through the iron gate entrance for the Gorge Trail or up the hill for the Rim Trail.

Along the Gorge Trail

As noted above, we chose to take the Gorge Trail down to the bridge crossing. This section of the trail is absolutely gorgeous! These trails always feel like they are transporting you to a different world.

Like other gorge trails in the area, the path is made up of stone slabs (until you reach Lucifer Falls).

You’ll see multiple cascades and smaller waterfalls along the trail, as well as a beautiful stone arch bridge that crosses Enfield Creek (your first crossing).

Lucifer Falls

If you walk the Gorge Trail first, you’ll see the top of Lucifer Falls. And it’s a bit intimidating looking down!

Lucifer Falls is 115 feet tall, with multiple tiers and cascades. As you descend the stairs next to the falls, you’ll be able to see its size more clearly. It truly is a magnificent waterfall.

Down to the Bridge

About half a mile from the Upper Entrance is the bridge connecting to the Rim Trail. Before reaching the bridge, you’ll descend a wood/dirt staircase.

To keep this trail at one mile long, this is where you’ll want to cross to connect to the Rim Trail.

Cliff Staircase and Views of Lucifer Falls

After the bridge, turn right to return to the Upper Entrance. You’ll be able to see the bottom of Lucifer Falls when you cross.

After that, you’re almost immediately greeted with stairs, thanks to the almost 300 feet that you have to climb back up!

Along the first sets of stairs, there is a good spot to view Lucifer Falls. I don’t think you can ever see the whole thing at once because of its size and the way it twists. But seeing people on the walkway next to the falls really gives you a great perspective of its size!

More Stairs…

The rest of the Rim Trail is essentially several sets of stone-slab stairs, interrupted occasionally by a dirt trail. At least it feels that way!

The stone staircases are very pretty though, almost a work of art in itself. We made sure to take rest breaks and enjoy the hard work that went into building the trail.

Eventually, the stairs end, and the trail evens out, making the last bit relatively easy.

Lucifer Falls Trail at Robert H. Treman State Park Wrap-Up

I am so glad we did this trail! I had hoped to complete the full 4.5-mile trail, but after our morning at Taughannock Falls and walking around Ithaca (not to mention some car trouble), I knew we wouldn’t have the time or energy. So, I was very happy to see the possibility of the one-mile loop from the Upper Entrance. And it was perfect!

It’s not the easiest waterfall trail in the Finger Lakes. No matter which direction you choose to start, you’ll have to walk up a lot of stairs (it reminds me of Buttermilk Falls in that way). But if you take it slow, it’s definitely doable.

Watkins Glen Geological History

The Glen Creek at Watkins Glen State Park descends 400 feet past 200-foot cliffs, creating19 waterfalls along its course. Over thousands of years, the Laurentide and Wisconsin ice sheets shaped the Finger Lakes region, carving deep cuts into the landscape.

The glaciers began to recede northward over 10,000 years ago, and water filled the resulting troughs, creating the long, skinny Finger Lakes. Since then, water has flowed down hillsides, carrying debris that has cut away at soft sedimentary rock, forming the area’s famous gorges. The rocks in the region include shale, limestone, and sandstone, which erode at different rates, creating different levels of waterfalls, cascades, plunge pools, and potholes.

Things to Know Before You Plan a Trip to Walk the Gorge at Watkins Glen

Park Fees

New York State Parks charge entry fees for access. At Watkins Glen, the fee is charged per car. However, keep your receipt! You can visit other state parks the same day, like Taughannock Falls, Robert H. Treman, and Buttermilk Falls, without having to pay an entry fee again.

Good to Know: If you walk into the park, you do not have to pay an entrance fee.

Parking

There are several parking lots at Watkins Glen State Park. Which entrance you use determines which lot you will park in.

Parking for the Main Entrance is located on 10th Street in Watkins Glen. Parking for the South and Upper entrances is just past their respective gatehouses.

Good to Know: We parked at the South Entrance and entered the trail via Couch’s Staircase.

Watkins Glen State Park is one of the most popular attractions in the Finger Lakes. It might be a struggle to find parking at the Main Entrance if you arrive between 10 am and 4 pm, especially on weekends and holidays.

Seasonal Closures

The gorge trail at Watkins Glen is closed between mid-October and mid-May. This can vary depending on the weather, so be sure to check the park’s website for the most up-to-date information.

Pets

Dogs are not allowed on the Watkins Glen Gorge Trail.

Cellular Coverage

There is limited cell coverage along the Gorge Trail at Watkins Glen.

Shuttle Bus

A shuttle bus operates between the three entrances (for those who might not want to walk UP the trail). As of 2026, the fee for the shuttle is $6 per person, one way.

The shuttle typically operates on weekends from Memorial Day weekend to the end of June, then daily through Labor Day, and then weekends again until the trail closes.

Footwear

Even though the Watkins Glen Gorge Trail is a stone trail, it can get very wet and muddy. Wear shoes with a good grip that you don’t mind getting dirty.

Hiking the Gorge Trail at Watkins Glen From the South Entrance

Although we entered the trail from the South Entrance using Couch’s Staircase, the rest of the information is still is relative if you enter via the Main Entrance.

South Entrance Trailhead

After parking at the South Entrance parking lot (near the swimming pool), DO NOT follow the signs to the Gorge Trail. I know that sounds counterintuitive, but we did that on our first visit, and it led us to the Lily Pond and then the Suspension Bridge, which is about a third of the way up the trail.

Instead, follow the paved path to the right of the pavilion and bathrooms. After a short distance, you will see a gravel path and a trail sign to your left. Take that trail! This will lead you on a short 2/10 mile, wide descending path to the South Rim Trail and Couch’s Staircase.

Couch’s Staircase

As you descend down Couch’s Staircase, you’ll get a great view of the Main Entrance of the park.

Go down a few more steps, and you’ll be able to see the brand-new Sentry Bridge, replaced in 2026. After the descent, you’ll walk a bit and see signs that describe the geology of the gorge. Then you’ll start the ascent up the stairs.

Cavern Cascade

One of the first major waterfalls you’ll encounter along the Watkin Glen Gorge Trail is Cavern Cascade. This 52-foot waterfall makes an impression as you walk along the trail.

But one of the highlights is that the trail takes you behind the waterfall (letting you see the 8th wonder of the world – any Jungle Cruise fans out there?😜). After the waterfall, you’ll walk up steps through a tunnel of rock that was constructed 100 years ago!

Suspension Bridge

Suspension Bridge is not part of the Gorge Trail at Watkins Glen, but it still makes an impression as you walk below along the trail. The bridge was originally built in 1870 and stands 85 feet above the gorge.

If you want to walk across it, take the “exit” right before you reach the underside of the bridge. That leads to the North Rim Trail (and Point Lookout). From there, make a left, and you’ll see the bridge.

Central Cascade

It’s a beautiful walk to the Central Cascade. The multiple cascades and smaller falls, combined with the massive stone walls, create a magical experience as you wander through. We also loved walking through the rock tunnel.

Central Cascade is the tallest waterfall in the gorge. At 60 feet tall, it stands out as it plunges under the trail bridge.

This section of the Gorge Trail might be the most photographed because of the jaggedness of the gorge and the creek.

Rainbow Falls

Be prepared to get wet at Rainbow Falls! It is a beautiful sight, but also the part of the trail where you walk through puddles and get sprayed by the water. Rainbow Falls got its name for a reason. When the sunlight hits just right, usually in the late afternoon, you’ll see a rainbow!

After Rainbow Falls, the trail passes Frowning Cliff, where you’ll walk under another (much smaller) waterfall.

Mile-Point Bridge

We chose to end our hike at the Mile-Point Bridge. I wasn’t interested in climbing the 180 steps at Jacob’s Ladder. And if that doesn’t interest you either, you’ll want to cross here.

After crossing Mile-Point Bridge, there are some steps that lead you up to the South Rim Trail. Once you reach the trail, you’ll turn left and head back down towards the South and Main entrances. Crossing here makes the full loop about 2 miles.

Good to Know: If you are camping at Watkins Glen, the Mile-Point Bridge is a short walk from the campground access trail.

Jacob’s Ladder

I’ll be honest, I’ve never finished the Gorge Trail to Jacob’s Ladder. But I hear there are 180 steps leading to the Upper Entrance (and the North Rim Trail). If you want to do the whole Gorge Trail, continue to Jacob’s Ladder. From there, you’ll take the North Rim Trail back to the Main Entrance, making your hike about 3 miles.

Watkins Glen Gorge Trail Wrap-Up

Even though it can feel a bit touristy, the Watkins Glen Gorge Trail is totally worth it. We’ve visited twice because we enjoyed the trail so much. And also, our first visit was on July 4th (that was a big mistake), so I wanted to try and experience it with fewer crowds.

Our second visit was during our camping trip to Watkins Glen. We walked the trail right before dinner, around 6 pm, and even though there were still many people along the trail, it was a much better experience.

Because of how popular this trail is, I don’t think people realize how much work the trail can be, especially if you aren’t used to hiking. I like that they offer shuttles for those who may not be able to handle the ascent (or even the descent, because walking down steps can be tough on your knees). If you are visiting with older relatives, or those who are not in the best of shape, plan to spend extra time along the trail.

Other Waterfall Trails Near Watkins Glen

The Finger Lakes is full of waterfall trails! You don’t want to miss Taughannock Falls Gorge Trail, which is a flat one-mile trail leading to the tallest single-drop waterfall east of the Rockies.

For other gorge trails similar to Watkins Glen, the trail at Buttermilk Falls is worth it (also many sets of stairs). And you can shorten the Gorge Trail at Robert H. Treman to a one-mile loop if the 4 miles feels intimidating.

Lastly, don’t forget about Eagle Cliff Falls, about 10 minutes from Watkins Glen. The trail to the falls is less than a tenth of a mile, and the park has a great playground for kids.

Two Ways to See Taughannock Falls

Taughannock Falls is a 215-foot-tall waterfall, making it the tallest single-drop waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains! It’s also the second-tallest waterfall in New York, second only to Kaaterskill Falls.

And, like Kaaterskill Falls, you can enjoy the beauty of this waterfall from two different perspectives, making it a perfect stop on your quest to see all of the waterfalls in the Finger Lakes.

First, I highly recommend you take the Gorge Trail to Taughannock Falls (which is probably why you’re reading this post). It’s one mile to the waterfall, but the trail is very easy and flat. You could easily push a stroller along the trail if you’re concerned about little kids. (More info below!)

However, you don’t want to miss the higher perspective! The Taughannock Falls Overlook is right off Taughannock Park Road. There are steps leading down to a small terrace to get a closer view of the falls. However, visitors can easily see the waterfall without having to navigate the steps, making it accessible to all.

There is a parking lot next to the overlook and one across the street. Although the parking lots can fill up quickly, visitors spend only a short time at the overlook, turning over parking spots quickly.

Next to the overlook is a small visitor center and gift shop where you can grab a snack, drink, or some Ithaca memorabilia.

Prepare For Your Visit to Taughannock Falls

Parking

There is a parking lot at the Taughannock Falls trailhead that holds about 40 cars. This trail is extremely popular! We arrived around 9:30 on a Tuesday morning, and the parking lot was almost full.

There is additional parking across the street at Taughannock Point if the lot is full.

Both parking areas are part of Taughannock Falls State Park.

Park Fees

New York State Parks charge an entrance fee. As of publication, it’s $10 for Taughannock Falls State Park.

Good to Know: Are you visiting multiple New York State Parks in one day? Hold on to your receipt. You can enter more than one park per day showing the receipt to the gate attendant.

Amenities

There are some picnic tables near the parking lot. There are no bathrooms at the Taughannock Falls trailhead. However, there are several bathrooms across the street at both the beach and boat launch.

Pets

Leashed dogs are allowed on the trail.

Cellular Service

We had cell service at the start of the trail, but lost it as we got closer to the waterfall.

Bring The Essentials

It’s not a long or strenuous trail, but it’s always good to bring water. Also, you can access parts of the Taughannock Creek along the trail, so bring water shoes and a towel to dry off.

The Gorge Trail to Taughannock Falls

Trail Location:	The trailhead is on the south side of the parking lot.
Trail Length:	2 miles out and back
Trail Difficulty:	Easy and stroller accessible
Trail Type:	Out and back
Elevation Gain:	60 feet
Dog Friendly:	Yes

Starting the Trail

The trailhead for the Taughannock Falls Gorge Trail is clearly marked.

There are a few signs explaining the area’s geological history (you’ll find several informative ones along the trail). It also starts with a small cascade on Taughannock Creek, which itself provides a beautiful backdrop.

Along the Trail

The trail to Taughannock Falls is wide and flat.

It’s very pretty to walk along, but also uneventful, though the views of the tall gorge walls are incredible. It’s hard to capture in a photo, but you feel so small! Don’t laugh, but it kind of reminded me of Zion National Park (in a smaller, east coast kind of way).

The trees provide plenty of shade during the summer months, and there are several opportunities to access Taughannock Creek to walk along the creek bed and dip your toes in the water.

Before you reach the waterfall, there is a sign stating that it’s the end of the trail and that “hiking only” applies going forward.

From there, you’ll cross a footbridge and reach a terrace to get a closer view of the waterfall. I’m not sure why they label that part right before the bridge as the “end,” since it’s still flat and pretty accessible to the terrace.

At the Waterfall

The terrace doesn’t get you too close to the waterfall, but you can still appreciate its size, as well as the height of the tower rock cliffs around you.

At 215 feet tall, Taughannock Falls is the tallest single-drop waterfall east of the Rockies (even taller than Niagara Falls!).

Other Things to Do Near Taughannock Falls

Once you’ve seen the beautiful waterfall, you can head across the street to swim or boat in Cayuga Lake.

Of course, heading up to the overlook and shopping at the gift shop is always fun too! Both times we visited Taughannock Falls, we stopped at the Cayuga Nature Center to climb around the six-story treehouse.

There are also several other hiking trails at Taughannock Falls State Park. The South Rim Trail will give you yet another view of Taughannock Falls, plus some other views of the gorge from above.

Lastly, you can maximize your state park fees by hiking at Buttermilk Falls, Robert H. Treman State Park, and Watkins Glen State Park. All of them are worth visiting.

Taughannock Falls Gorge Trail Wrap-Up

I’m so glad we did the Taughannock Falls trail! On our last visit to the Finger Lakes, we only went up to the overlook. This time, we really got to appreciate the size and beauty of this massive waterfall.

Eagle Cliff Falls at Havana Glen Park

Eagle Cliff Falls is a 41-foot-tall plunge waterfall that is tucked away inside Havana Glen Park. What makes this waterfall so impressive is the surrounding rock amphitheater and the 100-foot-tall Eagle Cliff.

The waterfall is about 10 minutes from Watkins Glen State Park, making it a perfect addition to all of your Finger Lakes waterfall hunting. We actually stopped at Shequaga Falls first on the way to Havana Glen. You could also add Aunt Sarah’s Falls to your list, giving you three waterfall stops within a 10-minute drive of Watkins Glen.

The trail to Eagle Cliff Falls is very short. It took us 3 minutes to reach the waterfall from the trailhead. Nowhere near the 30-60 minutes AllTrails has listed! And, even though it’s not an accessible trail, it’s very easy. There are several sets of steps along the trail, so keep that in mind.

Prepare For Your Hike to Eagle Cliff Falls

Park Fees

Eagle Cliff Falls is tucked away in the back of Havana Glen Park. The park charges a $3 entry fee, cash only, based on the honor system. There is a slot at the entrance to put your money.

Parking

Follow the road all the way to the back of the park, and you’ll find a large parking lot. It holds about two dozen cars. If for some reason the lot is full, there are other places to park within Havana Glen, and then it’s a short walk to the trailhead.

Amenities

Havana Glen is a small town park, but it still has plenty of amenities.

There are plenty of picnic tables, a restroom at the playground, and also a playground that will send you back to your childhood in the 1980s! Havana Glen is also a small campground, so you can camp there if you’d like. Though I’d recommend camping at Watkins Glen instead.

The Trail to Eagle Cliff Falls

Trail Location:	The trailhead is at the back of the parking area.
Trail Length:	2/10 miles.
Trail Difficulty:	Easy, but there are steps and uneven parts of the trail.
Trail Type:	Out and back
Elevation Gain:	20 feet
Dog Friendly:	Yes

Starting the Trail

I always love it when a waterfall trail starts with a small waterfall. And this one is no different. Enjoy the sound of flowing water as you ascend the stone steps.

Along the Trail

A majority of the trail is flat, packed earth or boardwalk. This is not an accessible trail, though, as there are plenty of steps. Most are stone steps, but there is one section of tall metal stairs.

As you approach the waterfall, the trail becomes slightly uneven and uses natural stones. None of this is difficult, but the stones can be slippery, so be mindful.

At the Waterfall

Eagle Cliff Falls and the surrounding rock amphitheater feel like a small version of the other gorge trails in the Finger Lakes. But that doesn’t make it any less impressive.

I love how the rocky cliffs surround you, creating a bit of a cocoon so you can enjoy the sound, sight, and smells of the waterfall. It’s quite a nice payoff for such a short walk!

Other Waterfalls Near Eagle Cliff Falls

As mentioned above, there are several waterfalls within a short drive of Eagle Cliff Falls. You have Deckertown Falls, Shequaga Falls, and Aunt Sarah’s Falls within a few minutes. And of course, the incredible 19-waterfall trail at Watkins Glen.

If you want to travel further, there are plenty of other waterfalls to see in the Finger Lakes, including the gorgeous Taughannock Falls, Lucifer Falls, and Buttermilk Falls in Ithaca.

Eagle Cliff Falls Wrap-Up

We enjoyed our short walk to see Eagle Cliff Falls. It was worth the few-minute detour on our way home to stop and see the waterfall and enjoy the playground at the park. I wouldn’t make a special trip just for Eagle Cliff Falls, but it’s worth combining it with the other nearby waterfalls and, of course, the Watkins Glen Gorge Trail.

Some Info About Camping at Watkins Glen State Park

Location and Park Entrance

Watkins Glen State Park is located in the Village of Watkins Glen in the Finger Lakes Region of New York.

There are several entrances to the park, but to get to the campground, you’ll want to use the South Entrance.

Camping Season

The campgrounds at Watkins Glen are open from early May until early October. The Cayuga and Mohawk loops open first, and then the remaining loops open about a week later. You can find exact dates on its Reserve America website.

Reserve Your Site

Reservations for Watkins Glen campsites can be made up to 9 months in advance. However, you can also make day-of (until 3 pm) reservations for any open campsite.

Park Fees

Although Watkins Glen State Park typically charges $10 per vehicle for entry to the park, your campground reservation allows you FREE access to all New York State Parks during the length of your stay. This gives you a good reason to visit nearby parks like Taughannock Falls, Buttermilk Falls, and Robert H. Treman.

Alcohol Policy

No alcohol is allowed at any of the campsites at Watkins Glen State Park.

Cellular Service

We had decent cell service while at the Watkins Glen campground. Our Verizon service fluctuated between 2 and 3 bars, and we were able to use the internet and social media apps.

Pets

Up to two dogs per site are allowed at the Watkins Glen Campground. A certificate of rabies vaccination must be presented for pets. Pets cannot be left unattended, and they are not allowed on the Gorge Trail, in playgrounds, buildings, or at the pool, so keep that in mind when planning your trip.

Nearby Amenities

The nice thing about camping at Watkins Glen State Park is that you feel secluded, but you are not far from civilization. That means if you forget or run out of anything, you have a short drive to get what you need.

There is a gas station right at the bottom of Old Corning Road that also sells ice and firewood. And a Tops Friendly Market is a little further down the road, selling whatever groceries you might need.

Activities at Watkins Glen State Park and Nearby

Hiking

Hiking the Gorge Trail is the biggest draw to Watkins Glen State Park. It’s one of the best waterfall trails in the Finger Lakes! The campgrounds (specifically Onondaga Village) have an access trail to the Rim Trail, making it easy to reach the Gorge Trail.

Swimming

The pool at Watkins Glen State Park is open from the end of June until the first week of September. Reach out to the park office to confirm swimming is open before your visit.

Fishing at Seneca Lake and Catherine Creek

Although fishing inside the park is not allowed, visitors can enjoy fishing at Seneca Lake or Catherine Creek. Make sure to follow the state’s fishing rules and regulations.

Boating at Seneca Lake

There are many options for getting out on the water at Seneca Lake. Seneca Lake Kayak offers tours and rentals. Sail True Love offers daytime and sunset excursions on a 67-foot schooner. And Finger Lakes Cycle gives visitors a chance to sing, drink, and snack while pedaling around the lake.

Biking on the Catherine Valley Trail

The Catherine Valley Trail is a 13-mile, compact stone-dust trail perfect for bike rides. It takes you past some of the best sites in the area, including Aunt Sarah’s Falls and Shequaga Falls Park.

Campgrounds at Watkins Glen State Park

There are six loops at the Watkins Glen State Park campground, all accessed via the same main road. Only two of the loops offer electric sites. The other four loops are all non-electric.

Cayuga Village

Cayuga Village Loop has 49 sites, all offering electricity. All of the sites allow RVs (varying between 20′ and 30′ allowance). There is a bathroom/shower house at the center of the loop. This loop is closest to the camp office.

Mohawk Village

Mohawk Village Loop has 55 all-electric RV sites. About half accommodate 20′ and the other half accommodate up to 30′. In addition to the central bathroom/shower house, this loop has a playground. It shares a road with the Cayuga Village loop.

Oneida Village

If you’re looking to stay in a rustic cabin, the Oneida Village Loop is where you’ll want to be. There are nine rustic cabins on this loop, as well as a mix of RV and tent sites (all non-electric) for the other 35. Like the other loops, there is a central bathroom/ shower house. It doesn’t share a road with any other loop.

Onondaga Village

Onondaga Village Loop is the only loop in the campground with direct access to the Rim Trail (which is why we chose it). The 48 sites offer a mix of RV and tent-only sites. There is a central bathroom/ shower house. And the loop shares a road with Seneca Village.

Seneca Village

Although Seneca Village has about the same number of sites as the other loops (46), the loop itself is a bit larger than the others, so the sites feel a bit more spread out (relative to the other loops). That’s good if you’d like more privacy, but you might have a longer walk to the central bathroom/shower house. Most of the sites can accommodate an RV. There is also a playground in the loop.

Tuscarora Village

Tuscarora Village has a lot to offer, especially if you’re camping with kids. First, there is a HUGE playground and also volleyball and basketball courts in the center of the loop, which can be a big draw for families. As well as a centralized bathroom/shower house.

However, a large chunk of the 53 non-electric sites are out in the open, poorly protected by trees, and offer little privacy. If that doesn’t bother you and you are camping with young kids, this might be the best loop option for you.

Watkins Glen Campground Review (Onondaga Village)

I can’t say enough good things about the campground at Watkins Glen! We stayed on a Monday and Tuesday night in mid-August, and the campground was about half full, so the bathhouse never felt too busy. The campground itself was also very quiet.

We stayed in site 189 on the Onondaga Village Loop, and I thought it was absolutely perfect. We backed up to the Rim Trail (I could see people walking, but we were high enough to still have privacy), and we had plenty of space.

The bathroom was across the road from our site, and we were right next to the access trail to the gorge, but the site layout and the trees still gave us plenty of privacy.

Checking In

Check-in was very fast and easy at Watkins Glen Campground. We entered via the South Entrance and were given easy directions to the camp office. There, it was less than five minutes to check in since I had completed the pre-registration before we left.

I was handed a map of the campground, with specific directions to my site, and a pass to hang on my rearview mirror that also gave us FREE access to other state parks during our stay.

Site Conditions

As noted above, our site at 189 in Onondaga Village had ample space. I set up our large 6-person tent and a smaller 2-person tent, and still had plenty of room. The site next to us looked much smaller because of the trees lining the back of the site.

However, when driving through the loop, it appeared that most sites had plenty of space to spread out.

Bathroom and Showers

The bathroom and shower house at the Onondaga Loop was fine. It’s not as nice as the one at Promised Land State Park in Pennsylvania, but it was clean.

I liked that they had a large mirror with a shelf and electrical sockets, making it easy to blow-dry hair. I actually saw someone charging their power station, and I thought that was brilliant! (You can tell who the seasoned campers are…).

The showers were hot with decent enough water pressure. I used the larger, accessible stall, which had a single knob and the water stayed on. The other stall had a push-button knob (similar to those you’d find at park sinks), where the water turns off after 10-15 seconds. Neither stall had a separate area for drying/changing, and there weren’t enough hooks to hang your dry clothes, so keep that in mind.

Also inside the bathroom was a large utility sink with an adjacent shelf. This is a good area to wash your dishes, but we used it to fill our collapsible water container.

Rim Trail Access

As I mentioned above, one of the reasons I chose the Onondaga Village Loop was the easy access to the Rim Trail and thus, the Gorge Trail. The trail is right across from the bathhouse (and right next to site 189). It’s about 100 yards long and connects you to the Rim Trail, near Mile Point Bridge.

Cell Phone Service

Cellular service was pretty good at the campground. I could easily access the internet, watch videos on social media, and stream music. I think we fluctuated between 2 and 3 bars and had 5g connection the whole visit.

Other Observations

A few other things about the Onondaga Village Loop.

First, if you’re looking for a little more privacy, opt for sites on the “left” side of the loop (when looking at the map). That would include 155-164 and 197-203. The other sites were a bit closer to the shower house, with some even backing right up to it, making them less private.

Also, I noticed the dumpsters weren’t bear-proof, which leads me to believe there aren’t many bear issues in the park. That would make sense since it’s literally right next to town and the park itself is very popular. As always, be mindful of wildlife when camping! We still put our food in the car at night to make sure little critters didn’t get into it.

Camping at Watkins Glen State Park Wrap-Up

I really enjoyed our camping trip to Watkins Glen State Park. The site was great, the amenities were good, and you can’t beat the location!

We were able to leave for the day and enjoy waterfall views at Taughannock Falls and Robert H. Treman State Park. We explored some of Ithaca. After dinner at the campsite, we drove into Watkins Glen to grab ice cream and then walk the jetty along Seneca Lake. There really is so much to do nearby.

The site itself feels so secluded, except you could hear a boat horn in the morning and a train going by in the evening – but those were the only indicators that civilization was close by. But knowing we were so close to anything we could possibly need made it even better.

If you’re debating about camping at Watkins Glen, debate no more! It’s a great place and definitely worth visiting.

Where is the Scenic View at Laurel Hill State Park?

Although the scenic view is a part of Laurel Hill State Park, it’s located outside of the main part of the park, about a 6-minute drive from the south entrance.

To get to the scenic overlook from Laurel Hill State Park, exit the southern end of the park, turn left onto County Line Road, and follow it for about 1.5 miles until you reach the intersection with Lyons Road. Turn right on Lyons Road, and you’ll see the entrance to the scenic view about .7-miles down on your right.

There is a small parking lot on Scenic View Drive that holds about a half-dozen cars.

Amenities

There are no bathrooms or picnic areas at the scenic view for Laurel Hill State Park. The closest facilities are at the Trent Picnic Area on County Line Road.

Leashed dogs are allowed at Laurel Hill State Park.

Remember, as you visit this park, to respect nature. Stay on established paths, pack out your trash (including food waste), and leave what you find behind.

Walk to the Laurel Hill Scenic View

Trailhead

The entrance to the trail leading to the scenic overlook is at the north end of the parking area. There is a guardrail stopping cars from the path, but pedestrians are allowed.

Along the Trail

The walk to the scenic view is relatively easy, with about 40 feet of elevation gain. The first part of the path winds through the woods and descends a bit, with the occasional root or rock to navigate around. It’s mostly composed of gravel, so it’s still relatively “flat”.

Once you come to the clearing, the path looks like your typical forest road, a wide gravel trail. You can see the overlook structure in the distance.

At the Scenic View

You have the option to climb the stairs in the old wooden observation tower. There is bench seating around the perimeter, but be careful; some of the rails aren’t super secure.

If you don’t want to climb stairs, don’t worry! There are a few benches on the opposite side of the tower where you can sit and enjoy the view.

Best Time to Visit the Scenic Overlook at Laurel Hill

We visited Laurel Hill State Park over a long weekend in July, and even though it was hot, it was the perfect time. We went to the scenic viewpoint at sunset, and between the mountains and the gorgeous wildflowers, I cannot imagine getting a better view.

However, the scenic overlook is open year-round, and I’m sure visiting in the fall is incredibly gorgeous! And can you imagine the snow blanketing the grounds in the winter? I would think this view is great any time of year.

Scenic View in Laurel Hill State Park Wrap-Up

Overall, I would consider visiting the scenic overlook at Laurel Hill a “must-do. ” It’s easy enough for almost anyone to enjoy, thanks to the shorter, relatively flat trail (even with the slight descent). Consider stopping by the next time you’re in the Laurel Highlands.

Other Things to Do at Laurel Hill State Park

We had such a nice visit to the Laurel Highlands. At Laurel Hill State Park, we enjoyed the trail to the Jones Mill Run Dam and also swimming in Laurel Hill Lake. You can also go boating and mountain biking during the warmer months. During the winter, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are popular activities.

Shenandoah National Park

Let’s get the most obvious one out of the way first! Shenandoah National Park is the main draw for visiting the Shenandoah Valley. In fact, it’s one of the best hiking destinations in the eastern US.

Shenandoah National Park is a 197,439-acre park spanning eight counties in Virginia. And honestly, there are so many things to do in the park itself that you might not get to any of the other things to do in the Shenandoah Valley.

Some of our favorite things to do in Shenandoah National Park are the awesome hiking trails (like Dark Hollow Falls) and cruising on Skyline Drive to catch the beautiful overlooks.

Good to Know: There is a fee to enter Shenandoah National Park. If you have a National Park Pass or an Every Kid Outdoors Pass, you can enter for FREE. Otherwise, keep your receipt after you pay, as it is good for entrance to the park for 7 days.

Natural Bridge State Park

Natural Bridge State Park is another popular Shenandoah Valley attraction. The 215-foot-tall arch draws visitors from all over!

But the natural bridge is just one of the attractions at the park. We enjoyed taking the “hike” to Lace Falls along Cedar Creek. It’s about 1 mile long (one way) and mostly flat, except for the 137 steps from the visitor center to the trail.

There is a fee to visit Natural Bridge State Park, but it’s worth it to see the amazing natural structure in person. Pictures just don’t do it justice!

Explore the Shenandoah Valley Caves

The Shenandoah Valley is home to many beautiful caverns. Each one has its own unique features to make them worth a visit.

Good to Know: These Shenandoah Valley caverns are cold inside! They stay at 56° Fahrenheit, so you’ll want to wear a sweatshirt or light jacket when touring them.

Skyline Caverns (and Mirror Maze)

Skyline Caverns in Front Royal, VA, are the only caverns with anthodites, mineral formations that look like flowers.

Skyline Caverns also offers a miniature train ride and mirror maze for an additional fee.

Shenandoah Caverns

The Shenandoah Caverns in Quicksburg, VA, are the only caverns with elevator service to the cavern floor, making them both wheelchair- and stroller accessible. It’s one of the best caves in the Shenandoah Valley.

Shenandoah Caverns also has a few museums on the property, including a parade float museum.

Luray Caverns

One of the most famous caverns in the state, Luray Caverns is the largest cavern in the eastern United States and one of the biggest draws to Luray itself.

Their new entrance into the caverns removed the need for stairs, making the caverns accessible by wheelchair and stroller. Your ticket also includes admission to three on-site museums. They also have a maze and ropes course for an additional fee.

Endless Caverns

Located in New Market, VA, Endless Caverns earned its name for a reason: The caverns are composed on underground tunnels that are over 6 miles!

Endless Caverns also offers tent and RV camping, hiking trails, and other activities on the property.

Grand Caverns

Grand Caverns in Grottoes, VA, have been rated one of the best caverns by Parade Magazine. They are the oldest, continually operated caverns in the United States.

Grand Caverns property also contains hiking trails, fishing, a playground, and miniature golf, making it a great way to spend the day!

Caverns at Natural Bridge

Right down the road from Natural Bridge State Park is the Caverns at Natural Bridge. This cave is 34 stories below ground and requires navigating 185 steps. Tours last for about an hour.

The Caverns at Natural Bridge are open daily from March through November and weekends only from December through February. They also offer gem mining for an additional fee and hiking on-site.

Massanutten Waterpark

Massanutten Resort is an excellent place to stay in the Shenandoah Valley. It’s close to many attractions on this, and it offers numerous things to do.

However, you don’t have to stay at Massanutten Resort to enjoy their waterpark! You can visit their indoor waterpark year-round. The outdoor waterpark is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Hours and rates vary depending on the time of year, so visit their website for the most up-to-date information.

Skiing and Snow Tubing at Massanutten Resort

If you’re looking for some Shenandoah Valley attractions for the winter, you’ll want to stop by Massanutten Resort for some skiing and snowboarding. They even have snow tubing!

Zip Lining and Adventure Courses

Massanutten Family Adventure Park

Another win for Massanutten! The resort really has so many things to do. This time, you can explore their Family Adventure Park. They offer zip lining, a fun kids’ adventure course, and even rock climbing and rappelling.

Many of the adventure attractions at Massanutten Family Adventure Park are seasonal, so visit their website for up-to-date information.

Bear Mountain Ziplines

Located in Luray, VA, Bear Mountain Ziplines has zip lines and ropes courses for all ages. Their Mama Bear course features 2700 feet of zip lines over seven courses. You must be at least 8 years old and 70 lbs to participate.

However, younger kids can try the Baby Bear course! This course is designed for kids 5 years old and up and features ten fun obstacles, including a zip line to end the course! They also have a climbing wall for the little ones.

Rope Adventures at Luray

The Rope Adventures at Luray is a great addition to your visit to Luray Caverns. This affordable option allows guests to climb through several obstacles on a multi-level structure. It’s another fun activity in Luray.

Natural Bridge Zoo

The Natural Bridge Zoo is a small zoo near Natural Bridge State Park and the Caverns at Natural Bridge. You could easily do all three attractions in one day.

The zoo is open from March through November and features a fun selection of animals like elephants, lemurs, giraffes, and tigers.

Virginia Safari Park

Another excellent animal attraction in Shenandoah Valley is the Virginia Safari Park. It’s located in Natural Bridge, VA, so it’s close to many other activities, like the state park, zoo, and cave.

Virginia Safari Park has a drive-thru where you can visit and feed animals from your car. You can also walk through the village to see many of the other animals up close.

The safari park is open from March to November, with hours varying depending on the season.

Dinosaur Kingdom II

If you’re looking for a kitschy roadside attraction in Shenandoah Valley, then you need to stop at Dinosaur Kingdom II. With fun and surprises around every corner, including a water gun fight with Big Foot, your face will be sore from laughter when you leave.

Dinosaur Kingdom II is open seasonally, April through October, with hours varying. Visit their website for the most up-to-date information. They offer combination tickets with other nearby attractions like the Natural Bridge Zoo and Caverns.

Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum

When it comes to things to do in Shenandoah Valley with kids, nothing tops the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum.

This 19,000 square foot children’s museum features all kinds of fun, hands-on exhibits, like a veterinary office, Native American homes, bees, and more!

Located in Winchester, VA, the museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, with additional Sunday hours in the summer. There are even more fun things to do in Winchester. You can spend a whole day enjoying the town.

Museum of the Shenandoah Valley

With art galleries, formal gardens, historic homes, and art trails, the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester, VA, has a ton of things to do!

You can visit the art trail and Rose Hill Park for FREE. Otherwise, the galleries, formal gardens, and tour of the Glen Burnie House require admission.

Frontier Culture Museum

Let history come to life at the Frontier Culture Museum! This living history museum, like Colonial Williamsburg, aims to educate its visitors about what life was like in the past.

The museum showcases the life and work of people in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries from the many countries that influenced the culture in Virginia.

The Frontier Culture Museum is open almost every day (closed on some major holidays), with hours varying depending on the season. Visit their website for the most up-to-date information.

Civil War Stops

The Shenandoah Valley has many ties to the Civil War. As you drive through the area, you can visit some of the battlefields of the war.

Many locations are significant to Stonewall Jackson, the infamous Major General of the Confederate Army, like his headquarters in Winchester and his home in Lexington.

There are also some excellent museums about the Civil War, like the Shenandoah Valley Civil War Museum in Winchester, as well as the Virginia Museum of the Civil War and the New Market Battlefield Military Museum, both located in New Market, VA.

Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum

Many people can name some U.S. presidents from Virginia, like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. However, not everyone knows that Woodrow Wilson was also a native Virginian.

As the 28th President of the US, Woodrow Wilson was responsible for many social and economic reforms, like the Federal Reserve Act, the Child Labor Reform Act, and legislation supporting working Americans’ fair treatment.

You can learn more about Woodrow Wilson at his Presidential Library and Museum in Staunton, VA. The museum includes his birthplace, gardens, and exhibits about his time in office.

The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum is open daily, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM (it opens at noon on Sundays).

Vineyards & Breweries

With exploring all of the fun things to do in Shenandoah Valley with kids, you’re bound to get thirsty. Thankfully, there are many excellent wineries in the Shenandoah Valley. Some are family-friendly!

Some kid-friendly wineries and breweries in the Shenandoah Valley include Blue Mountain Brewery, Stable Craft Brewing, Great Valley Farm Brewery, Kindred Pointe, and Castle Vineyards.

Massanutten Storybook Trail

We love all of the hiking trails available in the Shenandoah Valley. However, sometimes it’s fun to do an easy walk to a beautiful overlook.

The Massanutten Storybook Trail is a short, accessible trail that leads to an overlook of the Page Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains. You can see part of Shenandoah National Park from the overlook!

The trail is .4 miles to the overlook, about a 10-minute walk. It’s a fun and easy thing to do in the Shenandoah Valley!

Natural Chimneys Regional Park

Another unique land formation found in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley is the Natural Chimneys.

These massive rock towers were formed over 500 million years ago from limestone that began to harden under the seawater that occupied the area. Now, the 60-125 feet tall rocks draw in visitors from all over the country.

In addition to the Chimneys, park visitors can enjoy the hiking and biking trails, as well as fishing, basketball, volleyball, and a playground.

Edith J Carrier Arboretum at James Madison University

We loved our visit to the Edith J Carrier Arboretum! We had an overnight stopover in Harrisonburg, and it was the perfect place to stretch our legs.

With all the fun activities for kids, including a music garden and a spider web climber, not to mention the Little Free Libraries, it’ll quickly become a family favorite.

Even better, it’s FREE to visit!

The arboretum is open every day, dawn to dusk. Parking is available at the JMU R-5 lot on University Boulevard, in the Frances Plecker Educational Center lot, and in the Family Garden/Pavilion lot. 

Go Boating on the Shenandoah River

There is nothing like spending the day out on the water! Shenandoah River Outfitters in Luray has several boating options for you and your family.

Whether you want to canoe, kayak, or even tube along the Shenandoah River, it’s available! They even offer multi-day trips.

Things to Do in Shenandoah Valley Wrap-Up

With all there is to do in the Shenandoah Valley, I keep planning multiple trips to the region. It’s an outdoor lovers’ paradise, but also great for those who enjoy history, museums, and, of course, wineries. The Perfect Town for History Buffs and Outdoor Enthusiasts

Harpers Ferry is a Civil War-era town preserved by the National Park Service due to its important place in American history. And thanks to those efforts, it’s considered one of the best small towns in the USA!

The town is positioned along the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers in West Virginia, bordering Maryland and Virginia. Its location makes it a popular destination for outdoor lovers, with fun activities like hiking (the Appalachian Trail runs right through town) and river rafting.

Fun Things to Do in Harpers Ferry

Hike the Loudoun Heights Trail

• Trail Location: The trail begins at the River Access Parking lot, crossing the Shenandoah River via the bridge.
• Trail Length: About 6 miles (out-and-back)
• Trail Difficulty: Moderate-Strenuous – the majority of the trail is pretty moderate. However, there are some steep inclines.

At 6 miles long, the Loudoun Heights Trail is the longest of the two hiking trails near Harpers Ferry. However, don’t be scared off by its length, as the Loudoun Heights Trail is considered more manageable than the Maryland Heights Trail, with fewer steep inclines.

Hikers can park at the River Access Parking Lot on Shenandoah Street, right off William L. Wilson Freeway. Remember that this is still National Park Service property, and you will be required to pay a $20 entry fee. The parking lot can fill up quickly on weekends and holidays, so arrive early.

You can also park at the main visitor center parking lot and take the shuttle bus into town if the lot is full. The shuttle bus stop is about .5 mile from the River Access Parking lot, adding about 1 mile to your hike.

Cross the Shenandoah River Bridge and follow the stairs down the Appalachian Trail. You’ll follow the Appalachian Trail for about 1.3 miles until you reach an intersection with blue blazes. The trail ends at the Split Rock overlook and then backtracks down.

Plan to spend about 3-4 hours completing this trail.

Hike to Weverton Cliffs

• Trail Location: Weverton Road in Knoxville, MD
• Trail Length: 2.25 miles (out-and-back)
• Trail Difficulty: Moderate

Technically not in Harpers Ferry, but it’s only a short drive away, another hike to a beautiful overlook is the Weverton Cliffs trail. It’s a great day hike from Baltimore or Washington, DC.

Several switchbacks take you along the Appalachian Trail until you reach the Weverton Cliffs Connector. Follow that to the large outcropping of rocks, and you’ll be treated to another gorgeous view of the Potomac River and Virginia across the way.

Plan to spend about 1.5-2 hours completing the trail.

Rafting and Tubing

Of all of the things to do in Harpers Ferry, one of the most unique activities is the ability to river raft in three states on one trip! The Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers make for perfect class I-III rafting.

These 2-2.5 rafting adventures will take you past Harpers Ferry on the Shenandoah before joining with the Potomac River. The trips range from 6-7 miles, depending on the company you choose to raft with.

There isn’t much difference between the trips that Harpers Ferry Adventure Center and River & Trail Outfitters offer. However, they have different trip times and other additional activities, like ziplining and bike tours. Visit their websites for more information, including age and weight minimums.

Shopping and Eating in Harpers Ferry

Although the National Park Service manages much of the town, there are still privately owned homes, shops, and restaurants.

Hikers on the Appalachian Trail find the Harpers Ferry Outfitters & Bike Shop useful for food, gear, and tools. They also sell some fun T-shirts and other souvenirs.

There are small shops selling housewares, décor, and jewelry. If you enjoy shopping, you’ll love this town!

After shopping and exploring, you’ll work up an appetite. Thankfully there are several places to grab a bite to eat or sweet treat. We enjoyed our milkshakes at Cream Creations. They had some fun, unique flavors like Blue Panda or Banana Pudding.

Other Things to Do Near Harpers Ferry

If you’re up for a drive, there are some other unique spots to check out that are about 30 minutes from Harpers Ferry.

Antietam National Battlefield

There are plenty of things to do in Harpers Ferry and immediately nearby. However, I would also add Antietam National Battlefield to your list of things to do, even though it’s about 20 minutes outside of Harpers Ferry.

Known as the bloodiest day in American history, more than 22,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, or missing in action. It was also a significant turning point in the Civil War, as it stopped General Lee from advancing into Union territory.

Like other battlefield tours, guests will drive around to significant fighting sites, including the West Woods, where 2200 Union soldiers were killed in less than 20 minutes. Don’t miss the observation tower, with sweeping views of the battlefield and cornfields. And make sure to cross over Burnside Bridge and take in the towering “witness tree” adjacent.

Antietam Battlefield is open year-round, though the visitor center is closed on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. The National Park Service charges a $20 fee per vehicle, and the pass is good for three days.

Visit Frederick, Maryland

First, as far as historic small towns are concerned, you’ll definitely want to visit Frederick, Maryland! It’s home to the final resting place of Francis Scott Key (lyricist of the Star-Spangled Banner), and also a very cool Civil War medicine museum. While you’re there, enjoy the many cute shops and tasty restaurants.

Hike to the Original Washington Monument

Another historic attraction to check out is the original Washington Monument. The 30-foot-high tower was the first monument constructed to honor George Washington. It’s located right off the Appalachian Trail in Washington Monument State Park and offers beautiful views of the surrounding region.

Visit Crystal Grottoes

Lastly, I always enjoy a good show cave. If you do too, check out the Crystal Grottoes Caverns in Boonsboro, just minutes from both Washington Monument State Park and Antietam Battlefield. It’s easy to visit all three in one day.
